Renowned jazz musician Adonis Rose to perform at UT Arlington to raise scholarship funds

ARLINGTON - Grammy Award-winning jazz drummer Adonis Rose will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday Sept. 9, at The University of Texas at Arlington's Lone Star Auditorium to raise money for two scholarship funds at the University, including one that bears his name.

Rose, an artist-in-residence at UT Arlington, is a third-generation drummer who began touring at age 17 and has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, Aaron Neville, Dr. John and others. New Orleans magazine named him a "Contemporary Jazz All-Star." Last year, a New Orleans Jazz Orchestra album on which Rose played won a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.

He moved to North Texas from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and established the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra.

The Sept. 9 concert, where Rose will perform with the Adonis Rose Quintet, will be hosted by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 300 at UT Arlington. Proceeds will benefit the honor society's scholarship fund and the Adonis Rose Scholarship, which supports music students.

Rose is also the Phi Kappa Phi chapter's first honorary member.

The Lone Star Theater is located inside the Maverick Activities Center at 500 West Nedderman Drive. The concert is free, but tickets are required. For more information, call 817-272-2103. Tickets are available at Donations in $50 or $15 increments can also be made at that site.
