ARLINGTON - Tickets are sold out for this Friday's Maverick Speakers Series kickoff with noted filmmaker Ken Burns, who will appear at Texas Hall in a conversation moderated by Krys Boyd, host of KERA's Think talk show.

Filmmaker Ken BurnsAnyone who wishes to attend "An Evening with Ken Burns," but who does not have a ticket, may contact the Texas Hall ticket booth, 701 W. Nedderman Drive, at 7:20 p.m. They will be accommodated as space and time allow.

The UT Arlington lecture will conclude with a book and DVD signing at 8:30 p.m. in Texas Hall.

Burns has been making documentaries for more than 30 years. His films have won seven Emmy awards and been nominated for two Academy Awards. Burns' latest film is Tenth Inning, a two-part continuation of the Baseball series that aired in 1994 to an audience of 48 million.

It is scheduled to air on PBS stations, including local affiliate KERA/Channel 13, Sept. 28-29, just before Major League Baseball playoffs begin.

The documentary tells the tumultuous story of the national pastime from the 1990s to the present day, including players' use of performance-enhancing drugs, the influence of Asian and Latino players on the sports, the new Yankees dynasty and the breakthrough of the Boston Red Sox.

Burns' most noted works include: The Civil War, Jazz, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, The War and the National Parks.

Boyd has been host and managing editor of KERA-90.1 FM's flagship midday talk show since 2006 and host of a weekly television edition of Think since 2007. Think is an interview program covering a wide variety of topics ranging from history, politics, current events, science, technology and trends to food and wine, travel, adventure, and entertainment.
