Martin Luther King, Jr. “Sharing the Dream” events set for UT Arlington

ARLINGTON - Two events honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at The University of Texas at Arlington. The "Sharing the Dream" Awards Banquet is Friday, Jan. 14, and a poetry slam is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles, longtime pastor of the Monumental Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn, is the keynote speaker for this year's awards banquet, which honors individuals and groups that are making a difference in the community. Kyles, a humanitarian and resource on the civil rights movement, is the last living person who shared the last hour of King’s life with him on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968.

The banquet begins 6:30 p.m. Friday in the E.H. Hereford University Center’s Bluebonnet Ballroom, 300 W. First St.

Poetry enthusiasts will not want to miss “An Evening of Spoken Word Slam Poetry.” This event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, also at UT Arlington's Bluebonnet Ballroom. Admission is $15. Tickets may also be purchased at
