ARLINGTON - A new, landmark gateway welcoming visitors to The University of Texas at Arlington is rising at UTA Boulevard and South Cooper Street.

New UT Arlington Gateway TowerThe brick and cast stone tower will stand more than 35 feet tall and glow after dark with Maverick blue lighting. The monument was designed by Schrickel, Rollins and Associates, Inc. of Arlington, and incorporates materials and architectural themes that will be reflected in key structures within the College Park District.

“This lighted tower will become synonymous with a University on the rise,” UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo said. “It will be a gateway signaling that students and visitors are welcome on our campus. We expect it to become a recognized icon for our world-class institution.”

The gateway is part of the larger Engineering Research Quadrangle and will stand west of the Engineering Research Building, a 234,000-square-foot, state-of-the art, collaborative research center that opened early this year.

The emerging College Park District spans more than 20 acres along Center Street at the University’s eastern border. Signature facilities include College Park Center, a 6,500-seat events venue expected to be completed late this year, and College Park, a campus residential and retail center scheduled to open in summer 2012.

Schrickel, Rollins also designed The Green at College Park, a new urban park southeast of College Park Center that features sustainable materials and landscaping. The Green was dedicated this spring.

The gateway tower will feature specially treated glass that diffuses light and will create a glow unique in downtown Arlington. Similar glass and light treatments are expected to be featured in College Park Center.

Construction of the tower is scheduled for completion in August.
