Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI Assessment) - UTA students only

If you were not enrolled in a Texas public institution of higher education prior to August 22, 2013 or are not exempt from TSI, you MUST take this exam.  Prior TSI exams are no longer accepted.

The purpose of this test is to measure a student’s readiness for college-level course work.  The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Program is mandated by state law and requires all students attending a public institution of higher education to prove they are ready to take entry-level college courses which require reading, writing and math skills.  By law, the TSI Assessment, exemptions, and passing scores are the same at every public institution of higher education in Texas.  Please make sure you are prepared to take this TSI Assessment.

The test is computer-based and must be administered in a proctored environment at a college testing center.

For students who are outside of the DFW area: There are two ways you can take the TSI some place other than UTA.  You may take it at a certified Testing Center as a Remote Administration (please go to our TSI Remote page) or you may be able to take it from home through a Virtual Administration.  For more information on the possibility of a virtual administration, including the system requirements, please visit our TSI Virtual page.

More information about the TSI Assessment can be found in the Student Informative Brochure from The College Board.

You MUST complete the TSI Pre-Assessment Activity before you schedule your exam.  This is required by state law.

  • Approximate testing time for each section of the TSI Assessment is two hours. All three sections can take up to 5 hours.
  • Fee:  Each section is $18.
  • Test is offered Monday - Saturday throughout the year.
  • Advance Registration and Payment is Required.
  • Be sure to bring a valid photo id, such as a school id, driver's license, or passport

Register/Schedule at You must have your 10-digit UTA ID number to register.  If you are attending Orientation - DO NOT schedule your TSI Assessment during Orientation.  Ideally, the TSI Assessment should be completed before you arrive at Orientation.  If you have not taken it prior to orientation, you CAN still attend orientation, but you may need to complete the assessment before an advisor can clear you for the classes you want.  The TSI Assessment is offered Monday through Friday and on at least 1 Saturday a month.

Score Report:  Scores are available at the end of the testing session.  If you need your scores for another school, UTA students must obtain a certified copy of the TSI score report from the Registrar's Office.
