BASKETBALL TEAMS SET RECORDS. The men’s and women’s basketball teams both set school records in the 2002-03 season for most conference wins. The men finished third in Southland Conference play at 13-7 and were 16-13 overall, while the women finished fifth in the conference with a 13-7 mark and were 15-13 for the year. UTA was one of four conference schools to qualify both men’s and women’s teams for the postseason conference tournament.

MARKS FALL IN INDOOR TRACK. Sophomore Paul Whitty set a men’s school record in the 60-meter hurdles in January at the Oklahoma Indoor Track Classic with a time of 7.96 seconds. Rukaiya Holland set a women’s school record in the 55-meter dash in February, clocking 6.98 at the Red Raider Invitational. In the Southland Conference indoor meet, UTA finished fourth in the men’s competition and fifth in the women’s standings. For the men, Davis Tagi won the 800-meter run and Clement Taylor the 60-meter dash. For the women, Kajsa Haglund won the mile and Shaniqua White the 400-meter dash. The distance medley relay team of Miranda Zuniga, Nicole Noel, Ivorita Taylor and Lisa Haglund also placed first.

POINT GUARD RECEIVES ACADEMIC HONORS. Senior Josh Daniel was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic District VI team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He was also named the Southland Conference student-athlete of the year for men’s basketball and was selected to the inaugural NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team. Daniel, a public relations major with a 3.73 grade-point average, ranked second in the SLC with 4.62 assists per game last season and led UTA with 29 three-point field goals.

INFIELDER EARNS NATIONAL HONOR. Collegiate Baseball newspaper named third baseman Ryan Roberts the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his performance in six games March 3-9. Roberts, a junior from Bedford, hit .480 (12 for 25) with four home runs, 11 runs batted in and nine runs scored. In the Mavericks’ 18-6 victory over Centenary, he tied the school record with five hits, including two home runs.

PITCHER SETS SOFTBALL STRIKEOUT RECORD. Junior Katy Cox fanned 29 batters during a March series against Northwestern State to become UTA’s career leader in strikeouts. She surpassed the mark of 615 set by Debbie Day from 1987-1989.

WHEELCHAIR TEAM FALLS IN TITLE GAME. The Movin’ Mavs lost, 61-59, to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the championship game of the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in March. UTA, which defeated Illinois, 62-50, in the semifinals, was vying for its second straight national title and seventh overall.

TENNIS TEAM WINS SLC. The men’s tennis team defeated U.T. San Antonio in the championship match of SLC Tournament in April, earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UTA placed seven men on the All-SLC team, including first-teamers Sandy Farquharson, Javier Carrillo and Alon Goldshuv. In women’s action, Annemarie Lenze was named SLC Player of the Year.
