Kathy Marcum and Kirk Walden (as Sam Maverick) wrangle the Maverick horse near the University Center mall area. UTA has seen many iterations of mascots over the years, including the short-lived Grubbers from 1917-1921, the Junior Aggies from 1923-1949, the controversial Rebels from 1951-1971, and the Mavericks we know today. Sam Maverick was UTA’s mascot until 2007, when Blaze the Maverick took the reins.
