Biography

Muthu Wijesundara, Ph.D., Principal Research Scientist, leads the Biomedical Technologies Division at The University of Texas at Arlington Research Institute (UTARI). The Division focuses on advances in technology that apply to tissue regeneration and wound healing, drug delivery, and prosthetic devices and interfaces. Wijesundara is working to develop manufacturing processes for compliant microfluidics, flexible electronics, and sensors. He is also a Special Member of the graduate faculty for the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Texas at Arlington.

He joined UTARI in 2010. Previously, he served as Process Engineering Manager at the Northern California Nanotechnology Center at the University of California at Davis from 2008-2009. From 2001-2008 he was on staff at the University of California, Berkeley, first as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and then for five years as a Research Specialist in the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center. He earned a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2001 and a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, in 1991.

Wijesundara has a multi-disciplinary approach to his work, drawing upon his background in material development and analysis, micro/nano fabrication, and micro/nano device engineering. His focus and knowledge of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), particularly SiC (Silicon Carbide) MEMS, has generated talks in the U.S. and abroad, including the keynote address at the International Microelectronics and Packaging Society (IMAP) Nordic Chapter conference. He co-authored the book, Silicon Carbide Microsystems for Harsh Environments, and is the author or co-author of more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He was recently upgraded to the prestigious level of Senior Member of the Instititute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
