UTA celebrates Campus Pride Month
The University of Texas at Arlington is using the month of October to celebrate with LGBTQ+ Mavericks and allies by planning events and showing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride Month is traditionally celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. UTA is celebrating Campus Pride Month in October because students often leave campus during the summer months.
Josh Mackrill, LGBTQ+ Program coordinator, said as students get involved on campus this fall, the program wants to “match their energy” with this year’s Campus Pride Month.
“We are taking the opportunity to work with various departments on campus for our LGBTQ+ and ally students to be seen, heard, and recognized, and use that time to find their beautiful community here at UTA,” Mackrill said. “There are several opportunities throughout the month to learn, engage and have a great time with the LGBTQ+ Program.”
The schedule of events includes the following highlights:
- On Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., the campus community can meet at Brazos Park for UTA’s National Coming Out Day Festival for live music and activities. In case of rain, please join the fun at the Palo Duro Lounge in the University Center.
- Laugh OUT Loud: Featuring Comedian Irene Tu on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Rosebud Theatre is slated as one of the University’s signature events. Tu is a stand-up comedian, actor and writer.
- The UTA Drag Show will be Oct. 25 in the Rosebud Theatre starting at 5 p.m. All tips and donations will go toward UTA’s LGBTQ+ Program scholarship fund. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring any food item to donate to the Maverick Pantry.
