LONG TERM AGING CHARACTERISTICS OF
POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED (PCR) POLYCARBONATES FOR CONSUMER HARDWARE
Rashed Islam, Ph.D.
Group Manager, Lyft Co.

Abstract: Plastics are a versatile class of materials which can be found in products ranging from single-use packaging to components used in automotive and durable goods. Unfortunately, plastics are also identified as an environmental pollutant due to inadequate recycling rates and poor end-of-life waste management. According to the EPA, recycled plastics account for far less environmental impact than their virgin counterparts. Studies suggest recycled plastics contain over 25% fewer greenhouse/carbon gas emissions than virgin resins. To meet the sustainability target, physics of failure based aging studies at various use case scenarios were carried out to correlate the mechanical properties of PCR polycarbonates (PC) and corresponding system level reliability performance. In this presentation, the effect of molding conditions, % PCR content, melt flow rate and various secondary processes on the mechanical properties of PCR along with a fractography analysis will be discussed. Finally, we will try to answer the question “Can Recycled Plastics be used in consumer and micro mobility hardware?” Although there are many factors associated with completely answering this question, the factor which we will be evaluating in this presentation is “Strength”.
Biography: Dr. Rashed Islam is the Group Manager (Head) of HW Reliability at Lyft Transit Bikes and Scooters (TBS). His group is responsible for the product reliability for the micro mobility devices (E-Bikes, E-Scooters, Stations etc.) and spearheading the effort for implementing the sustainable materials into the products. Previously Rashed was the Technical Lead Manager at Google Devices and Services (2014 – 2022) where he was responsible for the End-to-End Product Reliability for the award-winning Nest Smart home and Augmented Reality Devices. He led the Sustainable Materials Reliability efforts for Google’s consumer HW. Rashed has more than 15 years of industry experience in reliability engineering, failure analysis, and materials development (recycled plastics, Pb free solder, piezoelectric, and magnetoelectric materials). Before Google, Rashed worked on E-readers and Tablets (at Amazon Lab126), LEDs (at Philips Lumileds) and Energy Harvesters and Dielectric Antennas (at Eoplex Technologies Inc). Rashed completed his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Texas at Arlington in 2008 and has published more than 50 Journal/Conference publications/Book chapters and 2 US patents. Rashed was identified as Top Talent in Google Nest (2017), received prestigious “Product Excellence”, “Best Root Cause Analysis” in 2018 and “Product Integrity Engineering Value” awards in 2020 and 2021.
