The Maverick Entrepreneur Program and Award Fund
The Maverick Entrepreneur Program and Award Fund recognized eight outstanding student entrepreneurs at the virtual 2019/2020 Phase II MavPitch on August 13th. A total of $180,000 in development funds was awarded. The awardees are presented below along with brief descriptions of their business ideas and award amounts.
Store Sense
Deependra Thakur and Abhay Dere, both undergraduate students pursuing their degrees in computer science, joined forces to craft a comprehensive software solution meticulously tailored for gas station store owners. Their ingenious innovation brought efficiency to various facets of the business, encompassing seamless inventory management, precise sales tracking, insightful revenue analysis, and simplified employee management. Their outstanding achievement did not go unnoticed, as Deependra and Abhay were honored with $40,000 in development funds during this year's MavPitch business pitch competition. This recognition highlights the impressive potential of their visionary work in the gas station management space.

College Major Mentorship
Grant Dennis, an undergraduate advertising student, established College Major Mentorship to alleviate the uncertainty surrounding the choice of college majors. He achieved this by facilitating connections between students and accomplished career professionals who offered valuable mentorship. Grant secured $5,000 during MavPitch's Phase I and an additional $10,000 during the grand finale to recognize his project's merit.

Lens Defense
Stephanie (Brooke) Escudero, a management Ph.D. student, initiated a venture to offer an accessible and affordable solution for protecting eyeglasses and sunglasses from scratches. Lens Defense designs custom-made protectors crafted from the same transparent and durable material used for smartphone screen protectors, ensuring compatibility with any size and shape of eyewear. This innovative system offers a much more cost-effective alternative to replacing scratched lenses. Brooke secured $5,000 during the competition's initial phase and an impressive $20,000 during the grand finale in recognition of her innovative project.

Trail Angels
Virginia Bartin, a marketing undergraduate alum, and Patrick Bartin, an advertising student, jointly conceived an innovative meal kit service explicitly tailored for weekend hikers and long-term backpackers, ensuring they receive nourishment while trekking along the trail. The Appalachian Trail, known for its extended journey, traditionally involves months of meticulous planning. However, the Bartin siblings' solution aims to streamline this process by meticulously organizing the hiker's meals and delivering them to a predetermined trail location. Their collaborative effort was rewarded with $1,500 in support during MavPitch's Phase I, followed by a substantial $20,000 during the Phase II competition, underscoring the potential of their venture.
