What is Biology?

Biology is the study of living organisms and their vital processes. Biology is a large field comprised of many specialized disciplines that study the structure, function, growth, distribution, evolution, or other features of living organisms. Biologists study humans, animals, plants, and the environments in which they live. Biology is important because it helps us understand how living things work and how they function and interact on multiple levels. Some common areas of biology include microbiology, genetics, ecology, genomics, and physiology. Biology is also a multidisciplinary field, with scientists collaborating in disciplines such as biochemistry, biotechnology, biophysics, and astrobiology.

The UTA Department of Biology offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree options, all designed to prepare students for careers in any number of industries, as well as in research or academia. The department’s faculty have won numerous awards for their teaching, research, and mentoring, and they work hard to equip their students with all the tools they need to become successful biologists. Our faculty members have robust, internationally recognized research programs which utilize state-of-the-art laboratories and cutting-edge technology, giving students an advantage when they look to enter the workforce. The department encourages undergraduate students to become active in lab and field research as early as possible.
