Communication Alum landing positions following graduation

The Department of Communication prides itself on preparing students for careers in the fields of Advertising, Broadcast, Communication Studies, Communication Technology, Journalism and Public Relations.

Relevant classroom learning, engaging professors and invaluable internship experiences help Communication graduates prepare for careers in their respective fields. UTA Communication graduates are working in print and broadcast media, with top-notch advertising and public relations firms, and with a variety of businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Here's a round up of some of our recent graduates and where they have landed:

Anthony Garcia, a May 2013 CTEC graduate, was hired by Concussion Advertising as a web developer.

Tiffany Jackson, Dec. 2013 CTEC graduate, was recently hired as a front-end web developer at Southwest Airlines.   

Tracy Nanthavongsa, a 2011 CTEC graduate, is working as graphic and web specialist at Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

Christopher Dinh, a 2012 CTEC, 2012 graduate, recently moved from Fossile to Fidelity Investments in July as an associate user experience designer.

BCMN grad Alexandria Woldtvedt is working as a news reporter for KODE in Joplin, Mo.

BCMN grad Tim Hanson is a morning reporter and photographer at WHNT News 19 in Hunstsville, Ala. Following an honorable discharge from the Army in 2007, Hanson attended UTA and graduated Dec. 2008  with a degree in broadcast communication.

Emily Suied, PR graduate and past president of UTA’s PRSSA Chapter, works as a junior account executive at Jasculca Terman in Chicago, an award-winning strategic communications firm specializing in public affairs.

Yasmine Gila is as an Account Executive at Expose Communications, at boutique agency with offices in London and Dubai. Gila works in the Dubai office.

BCMN grad Reyna Cavazos (Dec. 2011) is working as morning news editor and assistant traffic and weather anchor at Univision Dallas.

Comm Studies May 2013 grad Razan Akkad has secured a job as researcher in Liability Claims for Geico Insurance Company in the firm’s Dallas office.

Paul Kozar, a 2012 Department of Communication master’s grad, presented a paper at the North Louisiana Behavioral and Social Sciences Conference in April at Louisiana Tech University. Kozar’s paper won best presentation on the topic of Health. The title of the paper is "Competing Discourse Surrounding Primary Caregivers of Hospice Patients." Kozar is working as a Dallas consultant with hospice companies and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Communication.

Advertising and Public Relations graduate Nicole Durham (Dec. 2013) is a marketing specialist at FilesAnywhere.com, a Mark Cuban company located in Dallas.

Dec. 2012 Advertising grad Claire Dunn was hired as a junior account manager at Concussion, a Fort Worth-based advertising agency.

Russel Johnson, who graduated in Dec. 2012 with an advertising degree, is working with the research team at The Marketing Arm, a Dallas advertising and marketing firm.

Dec. 2012 Advertising grad Kurt Prelosky is working in account services with an upstart search engine, based in Plano.

2012 Broadcast grad Chris Mead has been selected as a video production intern for the Oakland A’s Baseball Club, while pursuing his Master’s at San Francisco State University. While at UTA, Mead served as sports director for UTA Radio and led the student coverage of Super Bowl XLV.

2011 PREL grad Jared Chism was recently hired as a Senior Social Media Strategist with JCPenney.

2012 PREL grad Frankie Farrar-Helm has accepted a position as Public Relations/Communications Representative at Sellmark in Mansfield.

2012 PREL grad Alexandra Pietroforte has been hired at Downtown Arlington Management Corporation.

Chloe Jamerson, a May 2012 Public Relations graduate, has been hired to work in brand public relations for The Richards Group in Dallas.

Alison Cohn, May 2012 Advertising graduate/English minor, was selected for the Teach for America program and will be teaching English in Miami, Fla.

August 2009 BCMN grad David Mannering has been accepted to St. Thomas University Law in Miami, Fla.

May 2012 PREL graduate, Kristina Kopplin, has been hired as an Interactive Producer by Social Compass, a social media marketing agency.

May 2012 BCMN grad Christine Nicholson has been hired for a morning reporter position at KXII-TV in Sherman.

Karen Ramirez, May 2012 Broadcast grad, is working as a production assistant for Telemundo KXTX Dallas.

Katy Kiger, May 2012 PREL graduate, has accepted a position as promotions and marketing manager at Radio Disney in Charlotte, NC.

Taylor Cammack, May 2012 grad with dual majors in CTEC and JOUR, is working as a web developer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

May 2012 Comm Tech graduate Carlos Cucalon is working as a front-end web developer for Hanley Wood, a media and information company serving the housing and commercial design and construction industries.

Rebecca Strong Bartholomew, 2010 PREL grad, has accepted a position as marketing coordinator with Cassidy Turley, a leading commercial real estate services provider with more than 3,600 professionals in more than 60 offices nationwide.

Jessica Patzer, May 2012 Comm Tech grad, was hired by Concussion Advertising as a junior developer. Patzer completed an internship with the company that led to her job offer.

Kathelin Buxton, 2010 PREL grad, is account associate at Linhart Public Relations in Denver, Co.

Litany Brown, a 2010 PREL graduate, is the Client Manager of a social media campaign team in Standing Dog Interactive in Dallas. The Event Cinemas Frozen Coke Campaign produced by her team won multiple awards this year, including The Web Marketing Association’s Best Entertainment Social Media Campaign and an American Business Gold Stevie award for Best Facebook Page.

December 2011 PREL grad Kaitlin Hennessy is serving as event rental coordinator at McNay Art Museum in San Antonio.

Zachary Zielinski, Dec. 2012 Public Relations grad, has been hired as an IT specialist with XTO Energy.

2012 Public Relations alum Sir Jones has been hired as a professional recruiter with Focus Staff.

2009 Public Relations alum Benna Combs has been hired as a junior associate for social PR at More Cabbage in Cedar Hill.

2012 PREL graduate Priscilla Sanchez has been hired as a PR Specialist with Concussion in Fort Worth.

Grads turning classroom knowledge into careers

Broadcast Lecturer Julian Julian Rodriguez appeared on Telefutura 49 this week to talk about the student-run TV program and what the Department of Communication has to offer.

“The opportunities we provide to our students in the Department of Communication are unlike any others found at other educational institutions,” Rodriguez said. “We strive to provide a strategic educational balance between theory and practice in our undergraduate programs.”

Sonia Salas (left), former member of UTA News en Español, was recently hired as floor manager for Univison23´s morning show. She’ll join Reyna Cavazos (right), a former UTA News en Español executive producer and anchor, who currently works at Spanish-language station as morning video editor and traffic/weather anchor for the morning show.

Edgar Maldonado, a former UTA News en Español reporter, was also recently hired as Bilingual Communications Manager for the American Red Cross in Dallas.

Recent graduates of the Department of Communication receive their diplomas and hit the ground running, snagging great positions with top performing companies, non-profit organizations and media outlets.

Here's the latest alumni news on where our recent Department of Comm grads are working.

BCMN alum Charity Hitt is hosting a pre-game football show for Gator Vision at the University of Florida. Hitt, a 2010 UTA grad, is Pursuing a Master’s in Telecommunications at UF.

Chloe Jamerson, a May '12 Public Relations graduate, has been hired to work in brand public relations for The Richards Group in Dallas.
 
May 2012 PR graduate, Kristina Kopplin, has been hired by Social Compass, a social media marketing agency. She will be working as an Interactive Producer for the company.

Recent grad Trey Caron has accepted a position in Lawton, OK as production director for Townsquare Media.

Steve Korioth, news director for WBRL-TV (Columbus, GA), has been named director of content for WBTW-TV, Media General’s CBS affiliate in Myrtle Beach, SC. He will oversee all aspects of WBTW news broadcasts and content for the station’s website.

Rebekah Karth (BA, Public Relations) received the UT Arlington Honors College 2011-12 Bridge to Graduate School Fellowship in recognition of academic excellence. She began graduate studies in the Department of Communication in August. Rebecca was also named the Outstanding Honors College student for 2011-12.

Karen Ramirez, May 2012 Broadcast grad, is working as a production assistant for Telemundo KXTX Dallas.

Lauren Carr, May 2012 grad, has been accepted into the graduate program at the University of Texas at Dallas. Carr will pursue a masters in marketing.

Graduates of the Department of Communication are working in all fields of the communication industry and landing jobs in state and across the country. Here's the some of our latest alumni news.

 

Kristy Phillips (MA, Communication) has been was hired by Heise Media Group in Bakersfield, CA as the company’s new Marketing/Sales Coordinator.

 

John Harden (BA, Broadcast Communication) is freelancing for The New York Times. Harden will be writing one science/health feature a month for the publication.

 

Aubree McFadden (BA, Broadcast Communication) has accepted a job as producer for radio station KLTY’s “Nightlight” show.

Sandy Kurtzman (BA, Communication Studies) has been offered a management trainee position with Sherwin Williams Paint Services Group in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Alanna Quillen (BA, Broadcast Communication) has accepted a position with ABC affiliate KMID TV in Midland as weekend anchor/reporter.

Felicia Bolton (BA, Broadcast Communication) has been hired as an on-air reporter at KOSA in Odessa, TX.

 

Decklan Miller-McGee (BA, Broadcast Communication) has been hired by SKY Helicopters in Garland as a helicopter camera operator/videographer, providing aerials for KDFW and KTVT.

Erick Fernandez (BA, Broadcast Communication) has been hired as weekend Technical Director for Univision.

Chloe Jamerson (BA, Public Relations) begins a position May 15 with The Richards Group, a Dallas-based PR firm and one of the largest independently owned advertising agency in the country. Jamerson will be working in Brand Public Relations for the PR division, Richards Partners.

Ashley Montgomery (BA, Public Relations) has been hired by TracyLocke to work in the creative agency’s Dallas office. Montgomery will be working with media planners to set up advertising buys.

Department of Communication alumni are landing key positions in their respective fields. Here's a round up of where our recent grads are working and what they're up to.

Holland Sanders, Fall 2009 Public Relations graduate, was recently named Marketing Manager for the Fort Worth Opera.

 

Jared Chism, Dec 2011 Public Relations graduate, has been hired to do social media for AT&T. Chism was a featured speaker at the Department of Communication’s annual Communication Day event this fall.

 

Ahsan “Ali” Kahn, Dec 2011 PR graduate, was hired for an internship with Fleishman-Hillard, a leading international communication agency with 80 offices around the world. Kahn will be training in Washington D.C. before working on the firm’s Best Buy account in preparation for a new store opening in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

 

Erikka Neroes, a May 2011 Public Relations and Communication Studies (Organizational Communication) grad, has accepted a position in the Public Affairs office of the Department of Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System.  During her final semester, she served as an intern in Senator Wendy Davis’ office.

 

Erika McMinn, May 2011 graduate and recipient of the Department of Communication’s 2011 Outstanding Public Relations student award, is an account executive at Concussion, a Fort Worth-based advertising agency.

Emily Suied, a May 2011 PR grad and past president of the UTA Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), received a $500 scholarship from the Greater Fort Worth Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Jean Weaver, 2005 cum laude communication/public relations graduate, published her first book. The freelance writer and editor is co-author of The Transition of a Country Boy: A Memoir. Weaver assisted Ron Howell in writing his memoirs about growing up in West Texas during the Depression and later becoming part of the booming oil industry.

Spring 2011 grad Susan Wilhelm Chandler is working in the Communication Department of the Fort Worth Police Department. Chandler is responsible for writing press releases and producing the employee newsletter for the FWPD.

Zoheb Hassanali, a Spring 2010 grad with a degree in Broadcasting and a minor in Speech Communication, recently accepted a position as a multi-media journalist with WACH in Columbia, South Carolina. Hassanali worked previously as an on-air reporter for KTVO in Kirksville, Mo.

Andrew Knaus, a Fall 2008 BCMN grad, was hired at KTTC in Rochester, MN. Knaus previously worked as a reporter at a station in Helena, MT.

Hope Ekwue, Spring 2009 broadcast grad, accepted a position as Director of Communications for Strategic Government Resource and is the contracted Public Information Officer for the City of Keller Public Works Department.

MA Communication grad Matthew Fisher has accepted a position as Communications Manager of Multimedia for the American Heart Association.

KKTV/Channel 11 in Colorado Springs, Co has hired Broadcast grad Mecca Rayne as weekend anchor. Rayne previously worked at KSNT/Channel 27, the NBC affiliate in Topeka, Kan. where she anchored the morning show. While attending UTA, she was a production assistant.

Joe Gumm, 2002 broadcast graduate, is working for Fox’s Oklahoma City affiliate KOKH-TV as morning anchor.

Broadcast and Spanish graduate Alexis Spears has joined the staff of East Texas’ KTRE as a video journalist. While at UTA, Spears reported, produced, and anchored UTA News and interned at KCBI Radio and CBS 11/ KTVT News in Dallas-Fort Worth. She previously worked at WOAY, an ABC affiliate in W. Va. as reporter, anchor and producer.

Raquel Daisy, Communication master’s alum, is now a Communications Specialist for North Texas Specialty Physicians in Fort Worth.

Sarah Macias, Spring 2010 Broadcast grad, has been selected for a producer/editor position with KXII in Sherman, TX.

Chris Ghanbari, broadcast major, is founder of DFW Reporting, an Arlington-based online news outlet. Ghanbari opened the company in January 2009 because of “the need for more positive news coverage in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.”

 

UTA Alum crowned Ms. Senior America

UTA alum Debbie Carroll-Boyce of Frisco was named the 2011 Ms. Senior America at the annual Ms. Senior America Pageant held in Atlantic City, N.J. Oct. 2-7.

The Frisco resident sang and danced to “Stuff Like That There” from the Bette Midler movie, “For the Boys.” An educator for 31 years, Carroll-Boyce served as an elementary school principal for 17 years and as a middle and high school teacher and counselor for 14 years. She earned a Bachelors’ Degree in Communication from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master’s Degree in Education/Counseling and Mid Management Administration from Texas Women’s University. The active volunteer spends time tutoring students, and was named the “Most Positive Principal” by the Power of Positive Student Organization. 

 “Just because a person reaches a certain age, does not mean you should quit pushing and challenging yourself every single day. I am flattered beyond belief and will serve with great pride to help raise awareness for all I believe in," Carroll-Boyce, said.

Carroll-Boyce will use her title to promote a lifestyle of healthy living for seniors, raise awareness for mental and physical well-being and raise funds for research for Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia.

 

 

Alum co-authors first book

Jean Weaver, 2005 cum laude communication/public relations graduate, recently had her first book published.

Spring 1997 Journalism alum Terry Morawski, Assistant Superintendent, Communications & Marketing for Mansfield Independent School District, is featured in the July/August 2011 issue of Mansfield Magazine. Morawski is responsible for overseeing all communications, marketing and online initiatives for Mansfield ISD.

Matthew G. Fisher, who graduated in Spring 2011 with a Masters in Communication, has accepted the position of Communications Manager – Multimedia with The American Heart Association. Fisher starts his new job in August.

UTA Journalism alum and former Shorthorn editor Matt Stiles (now Matt Hu-Stiles) was included in a recent article in New York magazine profiling "21 new media innovators." Hu-Stiles currently works at National Public Radio as a data journalist on NPR’s StateImpact project.

Spring 2010 Broadcast grad Diana Rojas, has been covering the Dallas Mavericks’ court action for Radio Cadena Nacional (RCN), Columbia's national radio and television station. Rojas reported on the NBA Finals for RCN. Rojas has also been offered a freelance reporter position with Al Día, a Spanish-language newspaper owned by A.H. Belo.

Tommy Orellana, Fall 2009 Broadcast alum, has accepted a position with Univision Dallas (KUVN) as Director/Tech Director. Orellana previously worked as a part-time time production assistant at Telemundo before accepting a position working on KUVN’s morning news show.

Sarah Macias, Spring 2010 Broadcast grad, has been selected for a position with KXII in Sherman, TX. Macias will start her career with the station as producer/editor with hopes of working her way into a reporter position.

Spring 2009 Broadcast grad Jessica Carillo, who has been working for Telemundo’s local DFW affiliate, has accepted a position as entertainment reporter/anchor at Telemundo’s Los Angeles station.

Sean Bolton, Spring 2010 Communication Technology grad, has accepted a position with Ulterra Drilling Technologies as a database programmer focusing on data mining. Bolton will help the company extract data from the database into an applicable format for the company’s sales force.

Alexis Spears, Fall 2010 Broadcast graduate, has joined KTRE News Team as a video journalist. Spears will cover the city of Lufkin and the surrounding East Texas area for the ABC affiliate.

Fall 2001 Broadcast grad Joe Gumm, is serving as morning anchor for KOKH FOX 25 in Oklahoma City. Prior to joining the FOX 25 morning team, Gumm worked for Fox Sports Southwest and Fox Sports Oklahoma as anchor/reporter. He’s also been a Host/Reporter for CBS (KTVT) in Dallas/Fort Worth and covered the world of news and entertainment for Time Warner Cable.

Working World: Alexis Spears

Alexis Spears, a Fall 2010 Broadcast graduate, is working as a reporter for WOAY, an ABC affiliate serving Beckley, Bluefield and Oak Hill, W. Va. Alexis serves as night-side reporter and the station's only Saturday reporter.

"I am responsible for coming up with at least four stories on Saturdays," Alexis said. "I am enjoying getting to tell the stories to an actual audience who looks to you for that information on a daily basis, as I have at least one story on each day."

Alexis says she enjoys communicating with current UTA students on Facebook. The students are often seeking advice on how to land that first job after graduation. "It's very neat that I'm now on the other side and can provide that advice," Alexis said. "I was speaking to a former classmate who is also working now as a reporter, and we agree that it is cool to be of help to others because we were just in that position."
