Coral Reefs

Laura Mydlarz, associate professor of biology, is leading a new study to measure how susceptible coral species are to disease by examining their immunity through a series of novel experiments and approaches. Mydlarz is principal investigator of the project, titled “Immunity to Community: Can Quantifying Immune Traits Inform Reef Community Structure?” and funded by a two-year, $220,331 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences. Immunology

A UTA biologist published new research in the prestigious journal Nature Reviews: Immunology that concludes the body’s own immune system regulates bacterial communities in the intestine to promote health. "This knowledge could be harnessed to treat diseases caused by an imbalance in the relationship between the host and the communities of bacteria in their intestine, otherwise known as gut dysbiosis," said Jason Kubinak, assistant professor of biology. Sidley Scholars

Two UTA students were chosen for the national Sidley Prelaw Scholars Program in recognition of their academic achievements and their potential as future lawyers. Junior political science major Tiffany Nicasio and junior communication and history major Mickaela Alves were honored by Sidley Austin LLP, a large U.S.-based law firm with headquarters in Chicago. The firm’s Sidley Scholars Program is dedicated to increasing diversity in law schools and the legal profession. READ MORE

UTA Jazz Brunch | Time to hit all the right notes at the annual UTA Jazz Brunch during the Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival. Performances by UTA ensembles start at 11 am while brunch will be served from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Tickets for the event at $20 per adult are now available. Alumni and Friends at UTA Baseball | Head out to the ballpark with all your favorite UTA friends and enjoy a night of baseball and Cracker Jacks! It is the last scheduled home game for the 2017 season so come out and root for the home team. Tickets to the picnic hosted by Alumni Relations will be available soon.
