Hanli Liu, professor of bioengineering, is working to improve memory and cognitive function in astronauts during space missions by directing light onto their brains. Liu is co-primary investigator on an $800,000 NASA grant that will deliver a light-based technology to increase the energy available to brain cells and improve astronaut performance. READ MORE

Prestigious Fellowship
Allison Osmanson, a doctoral student in the Materials Science and Engineering Department, is the recipient of a prestigious fellowship from the Semiconductor Research Corp. The company-named fellowship, in partnership with Texas Instruments, funds tuition and fees for three years, plus a generous monthly stipend. In addition, two Texas Instruments employees will be technical advisers for Osmanson to give her more in-depth knowledge of where industry is headed and help her shape her study to best match industry interests. It is often easy to tell when a person has suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, but it is much more difficult to detect and determine the amount of brain damage a person has suffered when the injury is mild. Ashfaq Adnan (left), associate professor of mechanical engineering, has been awarded a $261,120 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program, or DURIP, grant to purchase equipment that determines the severity of brain injuries, even if they aren’t readily apparent. Sharareh “Sherri” Kermanshachi, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, has received grants from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development aimed at identifying and formulating best practices for construction of transportation projects.
