Hypersonic Leaders
UTA has brought its new arc-heated, hypersonic wind tunnel online, marking a new era in the University’s long history of aerodynamics innovation and discovery. The wind tunnel, the only one of its kind in the nation at a university, underwent successful testing in June, said Luca Maddalena, aerospace engineering associate professor and director of the Aerodynamics Research Center. Underwater Archaeology
While most underwater archaeologists specialize in the study of shipwrecks, Ashley Lemke, assistant professor of anthropology at UTA, explores sites that were once on dry land and inhabited by people. Lemke, who describes herself as a prehistoric underwater archaeologist, seeks to understand the social and economic organization of caribou hunters 9,000 years ago by surveying and excavating ancient hunting sites submerged beneath the Great Lakes. Dedicated to Discovery
Inside his lab at UTA, Venu Varanasi sets his computer monitor to negative colors for better contrast. He triple taps the screen of his cellphone to magnify every interface. And he relies on a team of UTA students to handle the micro-level, precise movements his research requires. All these adaptations help ensure that Varanasi’s progressive vision loss, caused by a genetic retinal disorder, doesn’t inhibit research that could revolutionize bone treatments for severe cranial injuries. His projects in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s Bone-Muscle Research Center, he says, are too important to let declining vision hamper his work. READ MORE

2019 IRP Grants
UTA has awarded six research grants to interdisciplinary teams focusing on key areas related to health, decision making, human interaction, and advanced materials. The Interdisciplinary Research Program, or IRP, grants provide up to $20,000 to help UTA research groups advance their work and become more competitive for external funding. READ MORE
