Monday, Mar 04, 2019

The UTA Department of History and Honors College welcomed students and teachers from Texas Region 21 and surrounding regions to the annual National History Day competition this past Saturday, March 2nd. The event drew emerging young scholars from seventeen schools across North Texas. Approximately 190 individual and group entries were submitted by 335 students.

Junior (6th-8th grade) and Senior (9th-12th) Division entrants developed Documentary; Exhibit; Paper; Performance; and Website projects on the theme –Triumph and Tragedy in History –which was chosen by the national organization to help students “view history through multiple perspectives” and “develop essential life skills by fostering intellectual curiosity and academic achievement.”

The top two entries in each category earned the right to move on the State of Texas National History Day competition which will be held on Saturday, April 27th at the University of Texas at Austin and the Bullock Texas State History Museum.

The Department wishes to thank the many teachers, faculty, students, and community members who volunteered their time and energy to serve as judges. We owe special gratitude to UTA History graduate student William Hansard and Samantha Dodd, formerly of UTA Libraries’ Special Collections, for the many hours they devoted to organizing and running the event!

Congratulations to all of the budding young scholars who made their own history with their Region 21 projects!

And best of luck to those who will be traveling to Austin to compete for a chance to move on to The National Contest which will be held June 9-13 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
