On-campus vaccine site to close

The on-campus COVID‑19 vaccination site powered by OptumServe will end operations on Wednesday, June 16. UTA students and employees can still register for an appointment or walk in to receive a vaccine in the remaining days the site will be open. The site is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the Physical Education Building, 801 Greek Row.

UTA employees and students also can receive their vaccines with priority access at six Texas Health Vaccine Hubs around the DFW Metroplex until further notice. Visit the COVID‑19 Vaccination Information and Resources webpage for more information on vaccine opportunities for the UTA community.

All guidance and protocols related to COVID‑19 for the summer semesters are available in the UTA COVID-19 Summer 2021 Campus Operation Plan.

Proactive testing for COVID‑19 is available on campus through the Curative Testing Center.

Staying in the zone

Cesar Torres, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, is using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to identify when a person is falling in and out of flow, also known as the zone.

Better bearings

Daejong Kim, associate professor of mechanical engineering, is developing bearings that do not require oil lubrication so they can operate at higher temperatures, reduce maintenance costs, and increase efficiency of turbine engines.

Campus design honors

CAPPA student teams won first place and honorable mention in the Master Plan category in the Environmental Protection Agency’s ninth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge.

Building trust

Psychology Professor William Ickes’ research into how people are not great at understanding what’s going on in others' minds was mentioned in David Brooks’ New York Times column about how to build trust.

Juneteenth celebration Thursday

Join featured speaker Pamela “Safisha” Hill at UTA’s Juneteenth celebration 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Brazos Park.

Juneteenth—June 19—commemorates the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was read to enslaved African Americans in Texas after the conclusion of the Civil War, which ended more than two months earlier.

Dr. Hill, adjunct assistant professor of social work, is a diversity, equity, and inclusion educator and a consultant at Diverse EduCultural Consulting in Dallas.

A DJ, entertainment, prizes, and barbecue are part of the festivities. Students should bring their Mav ID.

Texting platform survey

Is your department using texting to communicate with students? Want to know more? The campus is investigating texting platforms and best practices and wants to learn what you are currently doing or what you would like to do in the future.

Wondr is a UT System program that is clinically proven to help you lose weight, sleep better, stress less, and so much more. Sign up for the program, formerly known as Naturally Slim, through Sunday, June 20.

Staff Conference

The annual Staff Conference is July 13-15 on Teams. This year's focus is on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Staff Advisory Council sponsors the event.

Policy updates, changes

CO-PD-PR-01 Abandoned and Lost Property Procedure. Updates provide clarity on handling lost and found items on campus.

CO-UF-PO-01 University Facilities Use Policy. UTA parking enforcement employees were added as authorized personnel to request patrons on campus to identify themselves.

GA-UA-PO-07 Continuing Education Fees Policy. Updates remove a duplicative sentence and change the fee approval from the vice president of administrative and campus operations to the chief financial officer.

Outstanding Maverick Awards

The deadline to nominate employees and teams for the Outstanding Maverick Awards has been extended to Friday, June 25.

Food Pantry needs

The UTA/Tri-C Food Pantry needs chicken meals (Rice-a-Roni, Pasta-roni, Banquet, Chef Boyardi, etc.), canned beans, coffee, sugar, and grocery bags. Drop off donations 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday at 405 W 1st St. For more details, email tri.c.cyndi@gmail.com

Network maintenance on two Sundays

The UTA network will be unavailable due to maintenance 2-7 a.m. Sunday, June 20, and Sunday, June 27.

During these outages, the UTA Police Department’s main phone number will be unavailable. For emergency help, contact the alternative police emergency dispatch line by calling 817-371-0850.
