UTA to graduate first African American doctoral student in chemistry

Lindsay Davis is poised to become the University’s first African American student to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry.

Davis is one of more than 3,000 commencement candidates set to graduate from UTA this week during ceremonies scheduled for today, Wednesday, Aug. 18, and Thursday, Aug. 19, at College Park Center. You can watch livestreams of the ceremonies and a virtual ceremony Saturday, Aug. 21, through the UTA Commencement website.

The graduates will join more than 240,000 Maverick alumni across Texas and beyond.

COVID testing required

All employees who come to any UTA campus in any capacity, regardless of vaccination status, are required to submit a viral test (antigen test or nucleic acid amplification test such as a PCR) by Wednesday, Sept. 8. Read about the policy.

Free on-campus testing options are available.

The COVID‑19 Health Portal is now available in MyMav to upload the results of your required COVID‑19 test.

Vaccination clinics at MAC today

UTA has on-campus COVID‑19 vaccination clinics open to all employees and students, including one until 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 18. The shot site is in the exercise rooms of the Maverick Activities Center.

The vaccine is free regardless of insurance status. Each vaccine clinic will operate on a walk-in-only basis.

Other clinics are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 25, and Sept. 15.

You also can use the COVID‑19 Health Portal in MyMav to participate in the Maverick Motivator Program by uploading proof of vaccination by Monday, Oct. 4, to be eligible for prizes.

Class size reduced for two weeks

UT Arlington has temporarily reduced classroom density to bolster physical distancing efforts for the first two weeks of the fall 2021 semester, Wednesday, Aug. 25-Wednesday, Sept. 8.

The goal is to have UTA campus classrooms at approximately 50% capacity or less to create a safer environment for teaching and learning. The University will reassess the plan and announce any updates before Sept. 8.

Move-In Days volunteers

Helpers are needed for Move-In Days 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday, Aug. 20-22. Register online to sign up for two-hour shifts by 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 18.

IRB Mini Conference

Faculty, staff, and students who conduct human-subject research or would like to know more about the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process are invited to the virtual IRB Mini Conference 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Aug. 31. Register to attend.

University Club returns

The University Club returns with an all-you-care-to-eat experience with a different daily menu of entrees, salads, soups, and desserts, including vegetarian and vegan options. Hours are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday starting Wednesday, Aug. 25.

In Memoriam: Mark Sessumes

Mark Sessumes, statewide executive director of TMAC, died Aug. 10. During his 26-year career, Sessumes served as TMAC’s executive director and as regional director for the Metroplex region.

Report education, training for employees

Texas statute requires UTA to report spending greater than $5,000 per person per individual education or training course toward a professional license, certification, or degree. Access a spreadsheet template with more information on reporting required expenditures to the Office of Procurement and Payment Services.

Completed spreadsheets must be emailed no later than Friday, Aug. 20, to Julia Cornwell, senior director of Procurement and Payment Services, at cornwell@uta.edu.

Make appointment for Windows upgrade

Faculty and staff are now able to schedule an appointment to drop off their UTA-owned Windows devices at Wetsel Service Center for the Windows Endpoint Management upgrade.

Prepare for the upgrade before dropping off your device. If you missed the Teams live event about the upgrade, hear the Q&A session.

Behavior Intervention feedback

The Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) is eager to receive feedback on ways it can improve services to UTA faculty, staff, and students for the upcoming school year. Please complete the form if you have submitted a BIT referral or if you have not submitted a referral.

Electrical outage set for Friday night

The Office of Facilities Management has scheduled an electrical outage from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, to about 2 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Buildings affected include CAPPA (Architecture), Engineering Lab, Fine Arts, Earth & Environmental Sciences (Geoscience), Nanofab, Nedderman Hall, and Woolf Hall.

Available emergency back-up generators in these buildings will be maintained throughout this outage to power crucial services.

Save any computer work or data in progress during the outage. Additionally, to prevent any possible damage, turn off all electronic equipment including computers, scanners, and copiers prior to this outage. These devices do not need to be unplugged.
