Oozeball was such a mess on Friday

Oozeball made its muddy return to The University of Texas at Arlington a year after it was canceled due to COVID‑19.

The annual mud volleyball tournament, which dates back 31 years, is voted year after year as UTA’s “most popular tradition.”

COVID-19 vaccine clinics

Free COVID‑19 immunizations with the FDA-approved Pfizer vaccine are available at walk-in-only clinics 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, Sept. 30; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. Read more about the clinics and incentives to receive the vaccine.

Eliminating web bias

Gautam Das and Shirin Nilizadeh are using a grant from the National Science Foundation to determine how to detect and eliminate biases in web database applications.

UTA helps Ukrainian vets

UTA’s Veterans Business Outreach Center hosted an online job fair for Ukrainian veterans that could help them find gainful employment, including self-employment. More than 120 Ukrainian veterans attended.

Pickard Endowed Professorship

UTA named Mari Tietze for the Myrna R. Pickard Endowed Professorship in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation. She also will serve as an affiliate of the Multi-Interprofessional Center for Health Informatics.

MavREAD offers free copies of book

MavREAD (Respect through Education, Awareness, and Dialogue) is a new program offered by UT Arlington Libraries and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The UTA community can read The Sum of Us: How Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee in October and participate in related workshops and activities through April.

Free copies of the book are available through September. Submit your name and department to diversity@uta.edu.

Nominations are now open for MAVS 100, a program that honors the 100 fastest-growing Maverick-owned or Maverick-led businesses.

Latinx/Hispanic Heritage events

In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host a free luncheon to celebrate the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities' recognition of UTA as the inaugural Racial Justice and Equity Program Award winner. The event is noon-1 p.m. from Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Red River room of the University Center.

The research team of Peggy Semingson, Denise Hernandez, Peace Ossom Williamson, and Gabriela Wilson will speak on UTA's Latino health literacy campaign and will be available to answer questions about their award-winning work. Lunch will be served to all attendees.

Participate in more Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month events, such as the film The Monster in His Labyrinth about Mexican artist Diego Rivera and Latinx Art Gallery: Family Ties.

'Africa Found' exhibit

See the "Africa Found: Links and Lineage through Art" exhibit in the Visual Resource Common of the Fine Arts Building. The exhibit is in collaboration with the "Searching for Africa" display at Special Collections in the Central Library.

Make sure your department or organization is represented at UTA's National Night Out 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Brazos Park.

Grad School Expo

UTA will host the Graduate School Expo 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the Palo Duro Lounge of the University Center. The expo is free for students considering graduate or professional school, with representatives from UTA's graduate programs and other universities and institutions from across the state.
