UT System Regents name Evans-Cowley sole finalist for UTA president

The UT System Board of Regents named Jennifer Evans-Cowley, provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of North Texas, as the sole finalist for the president of UT Arlington.

Regents voted unanimously Friday to select Cowley, who has risen through the ranks of academia over the past 20 years and has held numerous positions at the academic program, college, and university levels.

Campus on remote status until Feb. 4

Because of the surge of the omicron variant of COVID-19, UT Arlington has temporarily shifted to online/remote classes through Friday, Feb. 4. The semester will begin as scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 18; no classes are being canceled.

Remote work and flexible scheduling for staff and faculty is encouraged when possible through Feb. 4. All University offices will remain open for business and services will be provided in person and/or virtually.

All students and employees coming to campus in any capacity for the spring semester must provide proof of a viral COVID-19 test by Feb. 4.

COVID-19 vaccine clinics at MAC

UTA offers three on-campus COVID‑19 vaccine clinics on a walk-in-only basis. The clinics, operated in partnership with Walmart, are free and open to UTA students, employees, and their families and dependents.

The clinics are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 12, Jan. 19, and Feb. 2, in the Group Exercise Room (102B) in the Maverick Activities Center.

Individuals 12 years and older can receive first and second doses of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Booster doses are available for all eligible individuals.

Chemists recognized

Daniel Armstrong, Purnendu “Sandy” Dasgupta, and Kevin Schug, professors of chemistry and biochemistry, have been named among the top 100 scientists in the world by The Analytical Scientist magazine.

Underwater diversity

Ashley Lemke, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, who also chairs the national Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology, is advocating for more diversity and inclusion in her field.

Microreactor refinement

Dereje Agonafer, Presidential Distinguished Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, is helping lead experiments and simulations of liquid metal heat pipes for micro nuclear reactors.

Storm preparation

Nick Fang, associate professor of civil engineering, is developing better methods to characterize, predict, and cope with large Texas storms growing more unpredictable due to climate change.

CAPPA alumni gift

The UTA Alumni Association, Architecture Chapter, celebrated the opening of the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs’ new Community Design Lab with a generous gift to support student-led projects.

Student media awards

Student journalists took home more than 30 national awards for their work at The Shorthorn and UTA Radio.

MLK Day events postponed

Arlington's Martin Luther King Jr. "Advancing the Dream” Four-Day Celebration has been postponed because of COVID-19. This annual celebration, set for Friday-Monday, Jan. 14-17, will be held at a later date.
