Minerva Cordero

Cordero receives presidential award

President Joe Biden has named Minerva Cordero, professor of mathematics, a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. She is one of only 12 individuals selected for the honor this year.

The national award recognizes the critical roles mentors play outside the traditional classroom in the academic and professional development of the future science and engineering workforce. For Dr. Cordero, the award honors the mentors and students in her own life.

Roshan Mashal

Afghan women's activist, evacuee joins UTA

For over a decade, Roshan Mashal has advocated for women’s and gender issues, access to education and participation in elections in Afghanistan. Now, she will serve for one year as a fellow with the College of Liberal Arts' Women's and Gender Studies program.

Mashal—who says her goals have always included sharing experiences and learning from others—will focus on journalism, women’s rights issues, and advocacy in her role at UTA.

Erian Armanios, chair of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, was named a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Early voting at MAC

Early voting for the March 1 primary elections will be at the Maverick Activities Center 8 a.m.-5 p.m. through Friday, Feb. 18; 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20; and 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, Feb. 22-25. The poll is closed Monday, Feb. 21.

COVID-19 vaccines, boosters available on campus

UTA has scheduled four additional on-campus clinics to offer the COVID‑19 vaccines and booster, free of cost, to UTA students, employees, and their families and dependents. The next is Wednesday, March 2.

At UTA’s on-campus clinics, operated in partnership with Walmart, individuals 12 and older can receive first and second doses of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Booster doses are available for all eligible individuals.

Each clinic will operate on a walk-in-only basis 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Room 102B in the Maverick Activities Center. Other clinics are on Wednesdays, March 16, and March 30.
