UTA should be one of nation’s most inclusive, impactful research universities

Jennifer Cowley, the president-designate of UT Arlington, said the University she soon will lead can forge a path as one of the nation’s most inclusive and impactful research universities.

Cowley, addressing community leaders, lawmakers, campus officials and representatives of the University of Texas System on Wednesday at a welcome reception at College Park Center hosted by UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken, said she is inspired and energized by what she has learned about UTA since the announcement of her appointment earlier this year.

Her UTA tenure officially begins Thursday, April 28, when she will become the University’s first female president and 10th overall.

Grandmother of Juneteenth

Opal Lee, “the Grandmother of Juneteenth,” told a UTA audience that the National Juneteenth Museum planned for Fort Worth “will show the world that we can work together” when she spoke on campus Wednesday.

Science Week

The College of Science will present Science Week, Monday-Friday, April 18-24. The special events highlight the expertise and achievements of the college’s faculty, students, and alumni and include live podcast recordings, panel discussions, workshops, and planetarium shows.

Reclaiming the Joy in Teaching

Make plans to attend the UT System Lunch & Learn Series: Reclaiming the Joy in Teaching at noon Friday, April 22. The virtual program is framed around the adage of “put on your oxygen mask first before helping others.”

Unconscious Bias

DEI Faculty Concerns Subcommittee hosts Unconscious Bias Monday, April 25. The workshop will be led by Jandel Crutchfield, director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and assistant professor of social work. Register to attend.

Archiving the Pandemic

UTA Libraries Archiving the Pandemic exhibit commemorates submissions about the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibit, which is a small selection of photographs, runs through Saturday, April 30, in the sixth floor atrium of the Central Library.

'Unexpected Encounters'

Kick off Asian American/Pacific Islander and Jewish-American Heritage Month with the panel discussion "Unexpected Encounters: Asian American and Jewish American Identities in Art and History." The hybrid program is 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in room 2102A and via Zoom.

Faculty Academic Integrity Workshop

Take part in the Faculty Academic Integrity Workshop at noon Tuesday, April 19. The program will cover academic integrity information specifically related to exams (in person and online), proctoring exams in person, academic integrity trends over the last two to three years, and how to refer academic misconduct through the student conduct process.

Learn about helping students live by UTA's Honor Code with the Faculty Guide to Academic Integrity. The brochure covers how to promote honesty, prevent violations, and address misconduct, and discusses the disciplinary process.

Training on certification of qualifications

All full-time and part-time faculty and teaching assistants who teach a credit-bearing course or have direct instructional activity in a credit-bearing class are required to have an approved Certification of Qualifications and Credentials on file before they are hired.

If you hire faculty, join Toni Sol, vice provost for Faculty Affairs, for the training session. Register to attend either 10-11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, or 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, May 25.
