Virtual forums with final candidates for provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs are planned.

James Spaniolo

Spaniolo named president emeritus

The University of Texas System Board of Regents has appointed James D. Spaniolo president emeritus of UT Arlington, citing his lasting and positive impact on UTA. Spaniolo served as UTA president from 2004-13 and as senior advisor for external engagement from 2020 until earlier this year.

Open-road therapy

UTA researchers have partnered with the Dallas-Fort Worth-based One Tribe Foundation to study whether motorcycle riding has therapeutic benefits for the mental health of veterans and first responders.

Primate pounds

JC Buckner, assistant professor of biology, is studying seasonal weight gain in male squirrel monkeys to determine its relationship to the species’ potential to sire offspring.

MavsDay sets record

On April 21, Mavericks from around the world came together to give $883,882 to UT Arlington during MavsDay, setting a record for dollars raised during the annual day of giving.

International contributor

Marilee Bresciani Ludvik is the 2022 recipient of the American College Personnel Association’s College Student Educators International Contribution to Knowledge Award. Dr. Ludvik is chair and professor of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Assistive technologies research

Ishfaq Ahmad, professor of computer science and engineering, has received a National Science Foundation grant to incorporate assistive technologies for people with disabilities and allow the NSF’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates site at UTA to continue.

TCP training sessions

Two-part TCP training sessions for managers and timekeepers are offered in person Tuesday-Wednesday, May 10-11, and Thursday-Friday May 26-27. Register to attend.

Annual Glass Art Sale

Faculty, staff, and students get an early peek at the annual Glass Art Sale. Bring your UTA ID for the early sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the Studio Arts Center. The sale for the general public is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 7.

Steam outage to start May 16

The Thermal Energy Plant has planned its annual outage of campus steam service to complete inspection and repair requirements of the system components. The outage is scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday, May 16. Normal operations should resume by 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.

During the time designated, the buildings served by the Thermal Energy Plant will be without hot water and steam, including heated water for the swimming pool. Electrical power, air conditioning, chilled water, and domestic cold water services will still be available.

Golfers make SBC teams

Sun Belt All-Conference placed two UTA men's golfers to its All-Conference teams. Paul Gonzalez was named to the Second Team and Kyle Cox earned a spot on the Third Team.

Dallas Wings start May 7

UTA community members can purchase discount tickets for the Dallas Wings home opener, which is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in College Park Center. Use promo code UTA22. The ticket includes pre- and post-game festivities with some of the players and coaches, as well as $1 hot dogs.

Maverick Open

Registration is open for the annual Maverick Open, which supports UTA Athletics. The tourney is Friday, May 6, at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington. For more details, contact Maverick Club Director Kyle Callender at 817-272-0694 or kyle.callender@uta.edu.

Metro Golf Tournament

Sign up for the 47th Annual Metro Golf Tournament for faculty, staff, and alumni Monday, May 16, at Iron Horse Golf Course. Register by Monday, May 9. Breakfast, lunch, and prizes are planned.
