Title IX: 1972-2022 50th anniversary.

Title IX turns 50 today

Today marks 50 years since the passage of Title IX, a federal civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in schools and universities. On June 23, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which included the landmark law.

Pell Grant marks 50, too

The federal Pell Grant program, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month, has helped more than 80 million Americans go to college since its creation in 1972. In the 2021-22 academic year, UTA disbursed more than $58 million in Pell Grant funds to nearly 13,700 undergraduates.

Mashal shares refugee story

As part of World Refugee Day, NBC Nightly News told the story of Roshan Mashal, a women’s rights leader and a Texas International Education Consortium fellow at UTA,. She explained the struggles she and other refugees have faced relocating to the U.S., such as lacking basic necessities and being separated from families.

Insects conquer plants

Alison Ravenscraft, assistant professor of biology, has received a prestigious national award for her research into how bacteria in the guts of insects break down natural defense toxins produced by plants, making them consumable for the host.

Four-legged therapy

Jan Finch, adjunct associate professor of practice of social work, and her 5-year-old terrier mix, Allie, extended a helping hand at an immigration center on the Texas border.
