Lt. Gen. Michael E. Langley (’85 BBA, Systems Analysis) is poised to become the first Black four-star general in the history of the U.S. Marines. He is awaiting Senate confirmation after the Biden administration nominated him to command all U.S. military forces in Africa as head of U.S. Africa Command.

Hypersonic heat

Luca Maddalena, professor of aerospace engineering and director of the Aerodynamics Research Center, and his team are studying how turbulence in hypersonic conditions impacts the response of materials used in heat shields.

Volunteer for Commencement

Volunteers are needed for UTA's summer commencement ceremonies Friday-Saturday, Aug. 12-13. Complete the Commencement Volunteer Form by Wedneday, Aug. 3.

Apply to Grant Academy

The Office of Grants and Contracts Services has partnered with Elite Research to host a Grant Academy to offer mentoring and support to select faculty or full-time research staff with an interest in raising external funds. Applications for the inaugural cohort are due Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Conduct hearing officers

The Office of Community Standards needs new volunteer hearing officers to assist with student conduct and academic integrity cases. For more details, email conduct@uta.edu by Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Help at Move-In Event

Volunteer for the Move-In Event 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, and help students get settled into their on-campus homes. Register by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16.

West Nedderman closure planned

Starting Monday, Aug. 1, West Nedderman Drive will be closed from UTA Boulevard to The Commons to accommodate line upgrades by Atmos Gas. Phase two of the project will involve closing West Nedderman from The Commons to Greek Row Drive.

Work will be done in the street and will not affect sidewalks.

For parking, use west entrances for the West Parking Garage. For lots 34, 22, and F‑7, enter and exit via Cooper Street.

Need a student worker?

Is your department or office seeking students for on-campus employment or work-study? Attend the Summer Virtual Student Employment Job Fair noon-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Faculty and staff with federal student loans may be eligible for loan forgiveness under temporary changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The temporary PLSF changes are set to last through Monday, Oct. 31. Learn more about the limited-time changes and eligibility.

Parking permits available

The 2022-23 parking permits are now available for purchase through MavPark. The parking rates remain the same for the fourth year in a row for faculty and staff and for the fifth year in a row for students.

Greek alumni breakfast

Faculty and staff who are alumni or members of social Greek organizations are invited for breakfast on 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in the Palo Duro Lounge in the University Center. Wear your organization paraphernalia. RSVP by Monday, Sept. 12.

Electrical outages planned

An electrical outage is planned for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, in various areas of the Science & Engineering Innovation & Research building.

Outages are planned for 5 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, in the Brazos Pavilion and the following buildings: CAPPA/Architecture, Earth and Environmental Sciences/Geoscience, Engineering Lab, Fine Arts, Health Center, Nanofab, Nedderman Hall, University Center, and Woolf Hall.

Building generators will support limited electrical needs except for the Brazos Pavilion and the Health Center.

Save work to prevent loss of data. Turn off electronic equipment; they do not need to be unplugged.

Policy, procedure changes

AA-FT-PO-02 Academy of Distinguished Service Leaders Policy—Updated to include administrators for their service accomplished during their time as faculty.

AA-UA-PO-03 Graduate Faculty Policy—Job titles were updated to provide additional clarity for faculty eligible to serve as graduate faculty.

CO-CS-PR-07 Outdoor Group Activities and Weather Hazards Procedure—Minor updates were made to reflect current procedures for inclement weather.

GA-IA-PR-01 Endowment Establishment and Management Procedure—Current language that reads, “Endowment distributions are an important source of funding and should be expended on an annual basis. Accumulations over two times the annual distribution (unless below $2,500) will be reviewed by the endowment compliance executive (Vice President of Institutional Advancement)” was amended as follows:

“Endowment distributions are an important source of funding and should be expended on an annual basis. The Endowment Compliance Officer will review:

  1. Accumulations over two times the annual distribution (unless below $1,000) for scholarship and graduate fellowship endowments; and
  2. Accumulations over two times the annual distribution (unless below $2,500) for endowed academic position and miscellaneous endowments.

HR-LA-PR-05 Military Leave of Absence Procedure—Updates were made to align with changes in state law for military leave for enlisted service members.
