Langley confirmed

Lt. Gen. Michael E. Langley (’85 BBA, Systems Analysis) was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to lead U.S. Africa Command, making him the first Black four-star general of the Marine Corps. He will be officially promoted during a ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Washington, D.C. Read more.

Lee named to UN council

Wei-Jen Lee, professor of electrical engineering, is one of just five faculty members from an American university invited to serve on the United Nations Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition: An Independent Advisory Council to the Secretary-General.

Tops for indigenous students

UT Arlington was chosen again for the 2022–23 list of Top 200 Colleges for Indigenous Students by the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. The list is published in the Winds of Change 29th annual Special College Issue, to be published in November.

Matsler leads initiative

Karen Jo Matsler, assistant professor in practice of physics, leads a national quantum initiative for high school teachers.

Rudewick recognized

Roy Rudewick was inducted into the Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame. Rudewick is senior associate assistant director for sports medicine.

Reby Cary honored

Public health research

A group of students and recent graduates of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation showcased its research to the Texas public health community as part of the UTHealth School of Public Health Research Beyond Boundaries Conference.

Jose Maldonado

Asexual reproduction

Jose Maldonado, biology doctoral student, is the lead author of a study supporting the theory that species that reproduce asexually have more harmful genetic mutations than those utilizing sexual reproduction.

Fast energy

Daejong Kim, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, is leading a project to provide a conceptual design of a 50-megawatt helium turbine and compressor for defense contractor General Atomics’ fast modular nuclear reactor.

Pediatrician shortage

Kristin Gigli, assistant professor of nursing, is serving on the National Academy of Medicine’s committee trying to understand why there is a growing shortage of pediatricians.

Report employee education or training

Texas statute requires UTA to report spending greater than $5,000 per employee on training and education for a professional license, certification, or degree. If your department has employees to report, visit Reporting Education/Training for University Employees to access the reporting template. The deadline to submit is Friday, Aug. 19.

Apply to Grant Academy

The Office of Grants and Contracts Services has partnered with Elite Research to host a Grant Academy to offer mentoring and support to select faculty or full-time research staff with an interest in raising external funds. Applications for the inaugural cohort are due Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Help at Move-In Event

Volunteer for the Move-In Event Friday-Saturday, Aug. 19-20, and help students get settled into their on-campus homes. Register by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Electrical outages planned

Outages are planned for 5 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, in the Brazos Pavilion and the following buildings: CAPPA/Architecture, Earth and Environmental Sciences/Geoscience, Engineering Lab, Fine Arts, Health Center, Nanofab, Nedderman Hall, University Center, and Woolf Hall.

Building generators will support limited electrical needs except for the Brazos Pavilion and the Health Center.

Save work to prevent loss of data. Turn off electronic equipment; it does not need to be unplugged.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Faculty and staff with federal student loans may be eligible for loan forgiveness under temporary changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The temporary PSLF changes are set to last through Monday, Oct. 31. Learn more about the limited-time changes and eligibility.

Greek alumni breakfast

Road work at two locations

West Nedderman Drive will be closed from UTA Boulevard to The Commons to accommodate line upgrades by Atmos Gas. Phase two of the project will involve closing West Nedderman from The Commons to Greek Row Drive. Work will be done in the street and will not affect sidewalks. For parking, use west entrances for the West Parking Garage. For lots 34, 22, and F‑7, enter and exit via Cooper Street.

Spaniolo Street from UTA Boulevard to Mitchell Street will be repainted Thursday-Friday, Aug. 11-12. Please avoid the area if possible during these days. Access will remain open to the College Park garages, UTA Bookstore, and retail parking lots from Oak Street and Center Street.
