Welcome to Maverick Country starts with MavsMeet Convocation and Afterparty

Celebrate the start of the new academic year with MavsMeet Convocation at 6 p.m. today, Monday, Aug. 22, at College Park Center.

The event will include a spirited performance by the UTA Band, spirit groups, student organizations, and a line-up of speakers including UTA President Jennifer Cowley and student body President Teresa Nguyen.

Faculty and staff also are invited to celebrate at the Afterparty and join in the activities in the University Center. The fun includes a mechanical bull, caricature artists, airbrush tattoos, and a dance party hosted by DJSC. Free food and giveaways, too.

The convocation is part of the Maverick Stampede, UTA's welcoming tradition of events, activities, networking, and socializing.

Bilingual, virtual approach

Shuchisnigdha Deb, assistant professor of industrial, manufacturing, and systems engineering, is using virtual reality technology to develop a bilingual (English/Spanish) immersive learning environment for students to better understand the field of additive manufacturing.

E-ticketing technology

Sharareh “Sherri” Kermanshachi, associate professor of civil engineering, has earned a grant to study the effectiveness of electronic ticketing technology in transportation projects.

Academic Early Alert

UTA’s Academic Early Alert is a referral program that seeks to provide support to students who have demonstrated behaviors that may hinder academic performance and overall student success. The former process via Civitas Inspire for Advisors is set to expire soon. Read more for details.

One-day upgrade and other parking news

New this year is a one-day upgrade to your parking permit. This includes the Maverick Parking Garage and reserved spaces in select lots.

The start of each semester is always an exciting time, as well as a time of full parking lots and higher-than-normal traffic. Be sure to add extra time (and patience) to your commute. Read more about navigating back-to-school traffic.

Mmmm, Waffleopolis

Faculty and staff are invited to this delicious traditional treat 8-10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. Waffleopolis lets new and old friends meet up to enjoy waffles with a variety of toppings. The event also features music and dancing, all at Brazos Park and the University Center mall.

First-generation brunch

Are you the first in your family to attend a four-year university? If so, you are invited to the First-Generation College Student Brunch and Alumni Mixer 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the University Center. Share with students about how you found success in college and your career.

MAFE faculty fellowship

Learn to incorporate experiential activities into your course by becoming a Faculty Fellow of the Maverick Advantage Faculty Engagement program. Apply by Friday, Aug. 26. For questions, contact Susan Dequeant at dequeant@uta.edu.

DEI convocation

Mark your calendars for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion convocation Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the Rio Grande Ballroom of the University Center. The topic is "The History of Race and Racism in North Texas and the Future of Equity Work." Register by Friday, Sept. 9.

UTA Night at the Rangers

Swing for the fences and enjoy UTA Night at the Rangers with your fellow Mavs. The Rangers will play the Oakland Athletics at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Globe Life Field. Tickets start at $17. Buy tickets to the game to be eligible for a special UTA/Texas Rangers hat.
