Maverick basketball season party begins

Mav Madness tips off the men’s and women’s basketball season at 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 20, at College Park Center! UTA’s entertainment-filled primetime event is the teams' first back in the Western Athletic Conference.

This event is free, and the first 500 fans will receive a Mav Madness T-shirt. Witness players in skills competitions and an intersquad scrimmage and enjoy free food and soft drinks while watching a performance by Steve Max, the Master of Simon Sez, from America’s Got Talent.

Plus, fans in attendance have the chance to win these prizes:

  • Road travel with the teams
  • 50-inch TVs
  • RTIC coolers
  • Beats by Dre headphones
  • UTA basketball gear bags and more!

Watch the volleyball team's match against Abilene Christian at 6 p.m., also in College Park Center. Entry to the match is free for all UTA students, faculty, and staff with a valid UTA ID.

Compliance training deadline 5 p.m. today

You must complete UTA's complaince training no later than 5 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 20. If your compliance training is not completed by the due date, your Net ID will be deactivated.

Access your training in Canvas at uta.instructure.com. You alsp can access Canvas through the UT Arlington homepage at uta.edu. Click “Faculty & Staff” in the far upper-right corner of the page, then click the Canvas icon. The course training you are required to complete is 2228-GCTA-2223-100-Annual-Compliance-Training-2022-Fall.

Pinpoint dementia diagnosis

Dajiang Zhu, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, will advance and integrate powerful deep-learning methods and tools to pinpoint types of Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias, which in turn could help the medical community better treat those diseases.

Dillon Center turns 10

A symposium celebrating the 10th anniversary of UTA’s David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture will focus on preserving the cultural landscape of historically Black communities in North Texas. “Don’t Sell the Land: Community, Housing, and Design Justice” runs through Saturday, Oct. 22.

Student startups win MavPitch

Ten student-led startup firms were awarded a total of $185,000 at the Maverick Entrepreneur Program and Award Fund's MavPitch Phase II grand finale.

Bioactive heart

Yi Hong, associate professor of bioengineering, is leading a team to develop new bioactive materials to mimic the natural state of a body for heart research.

Grant aids study abroad

UTA students have a chance to take their studies abroad, building their resumes while experiencing the world firsthand, thanks a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students Program.

Procedure changes

These three new procedures were put in place as part of a realignment of facility use policies and procedures and to make processes consistent for reservation and rental of College Park Center, Texas Hall, and the University Center.

UT Arlington celebrates National Transfer Student Week with events that bring together transfer students and the UTA teams that support them.

NBC News on campus

A team of NBC News executives, on-air reporters, and behind-the-scenes producers came to UTA to demonstrate the latest TV news technology and answer questions from UTA broadcasting students.

AIDS Memorial Quilt

A panel of speakers will discuss their experiences with the AIDS epidemic at Preserving LGBTQ+ History: The Legacy of the Aids Memorial Quilt 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the sixth floor parlor of the Central Library. The quilt is on display in the sixth floor 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Saturday, Oct. 29.

Open Access Week

UTA Libraries hosts presentations on "Open for Climate Justice" during Open Access Week, Monday-Sunday, Oct. 24-30. Register by Friday, Oct. 21, to attend presentations on Open Press Project, an on-campus OER case study, preserving digital content, and climatic conditions in Texas using ArcGIS.

Drug Take Back Day

Get rid of older or unused medications at a drive–thru drug collection 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the main entrance of Medical City Arlington, in cooperation with the Arlington Police Department.

Early voting for the Nov. 8 elections is at the Maverick Activities Center 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Oct. 24-28, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, and 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

Step up to fall fitness challenge

Gather a team of three to five partners and get walking. The UT Living Well Fall into Fitness Team Challenge wants each team to log at least 825,000 total steps during the four-week challenge. Visit the UT Living Well platform to register for the platform and sync your fitness device (optional).

Autumn, Halloween fun for faculty, staff

The Office of International Education hosts Fall Fest 2022 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, on the west lawn by the Maverick Activities Center. The fest includes free food, pumpkin/craft painting, games, music, and more.

The Art and Art History Department’s 10th Annual Glass Pumpkin Sale and Fundraiser is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, for faculty and staff and Saturday, Oct. 22, for the public at the Studio Arts Center. Proceeds benefit the glass area's student organization and the program.

The Information Security Office hosts an open house with pizza, games, and prizes 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in room B78 of Texas Hall.

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first film adaptation of Dracula, the silent movie Nosferatu. The English Department hosts the show 7-9 p.m Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Rosebud Theatre of the University Center. Bring a canned good for the Maverick Food Pantry.

The music of the night comes from the Fine Arts Building when voice Associate Professor David Grogan gives some Halloween-themed performances. Dr. Grogan is known to dress in costume for some of his songs. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Irons Recital Hall.

The fraternity and sorority community invites families to enjoy children's games, activities, popcorn, candy, and more at the Great Pumpkin Carnival 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in Maverick Circle.

Register your team for the annual Homecoming Chili Cook-Off on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Teams will compete to win the ultimate prize of Chili Cook-Off champion, bragging rights, and an awesome trophy. Open to all UTA, students, faculty, staff, and alumni groups.

Be part of the annual Homecoming Parade, set for 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, down Spaniolo Drive along the College Park District. This year's theme is "Once Upon a Maverick."

Annie Liebovitz, Maverick Speaker Series, Nov. 29

Famed photographer next guest for Maverick Speakers Series

Join UTA for “An Evening with Annie Leibovitz” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Texas Hall as part of the Maverick Speakers Series.

Leibovitz is a legendary photographer who is primarily known for her iconic portraits of celebrities for Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Vanity Fair magazines. Several collections of her work have been published, including Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland in 2021. Her accolades include the International Center of Photography’s Lifetime Achievement Award and being named a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress, among many others.

“An Evening with Annie Leibovitz” is sponsored by Jeff and Jani Leuschel.
