Flu and COVID vaccine clinics this week

UT Arlington will hold flu and COVID vaccination clinics for employees 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, and noon-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, both in room 203 of Trinity Hall. Registration is required.

Please bring a photocopy of your insurance card and driver’s license to receive your flu vaccine at no charge. The cost without insurance is $29, payable by cash or check.

Primary and updated booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will also be available for ages 18 and up. Two months must have passed since your previous dose, whether that was the final primary series dose or an original (monovalent) booster.

Latin Combo kudos

DownBeat Magazine, a music publication covering jazz and blues, named the UTA Latin Combo as the top undergraduate Latin group in the nation at its 45th Annual Student Music Awards.

Veteran's Edge gift

Bank of America announced a $25,000 gift to UTA’s Veteran’s Edge program. Run by senior-level military-connected peer mentors through the Office of Military and Veteran Services, the program supports new military-connected students with various resources.

Matthew Walsh, professor of biology, and Kaitlyn Howell (’22 PhD, Biology) learned Trinidadian killifish evolve larger brains, increasing their fitness and survival rates in a high-competition environment.

Jun Liao, associate professor of bioengineering, is looking at new ways to improve the safety and effectiveness of medical procedures on patients with inoperable enlarged hearts.

Washington named VP for new Office of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion

Chief Human Resources Officer Jewel Washington has been selected as UTA’s first vice president for talent, culture, and inclusion, effective Nov. 1.

In this inaugural position, Washington will establish a new Office of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion, a combination of the Office of Human Resources and Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The new office will elevate UTA's focus on attracting and retaining talent at all levels, supporting an inclusive workplace, and advancing the development of our faculty and staff.

Be part of Leadership Academy

Faculty and staff are encouraged to apply for the UTA Leadership Academy, a broad leadership development program that includes the essential characteristics and skills needed to be an effective leader in a higher education environment.

The spring cohort of 15-20 faculty and staff will focus on practical leadership topics, issues within higher education, and personal leadership development.

Applications are due by Monday, Oct. 31.

AIDS Memorial Quilt

A panel of speakers will discuss their experiences with the AIDS epidemic at Preserving LGBTQ+ History: The Legacy of the AIDS Memorial Quilt 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the sixth floor parlor of the Central Library. The quilt is on display in the sixth floor 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Saturday, Oct. 29.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Faculty and staff with federal student loans may be eligible for loan forgiveness under temporary changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The temporary PSLF changes are set to last through Monday, Oct. 31. Learn more about the limited-time changes and eligibility.

Each month, the Staff Advisory Council recognizes a SAC Star as the embodiment of the UTA Maverick Spirit. Nominate someone you know who is exemplary in performance, customer service, creativity, and leadership.

Early voting for the Nov. 8 elections is at the Maverick Activities Center 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Oct. 24-28, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, and 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

Drug Take-Back Day

Get rid of older or unused medications at a drive–thru drug collection 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the main entrance of Medical City Arlington, in cooperation with the Arlington Police Department.

Women in Research

Join the Office of Sustainability and Women in the Environment for Women in Research, a discussion panel of UTA professional women working on environmental issues.

The luncheon is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in The Commons. Seating is limited. Tickets are $25.

Panelists are Gabriela Mustata Wilson, director of health informatics and public health informatics; Diane Jones Allen, professor of landscape architecture; Peggy Semingson, associate professor of TESOL; and Amruta Sakalker, graduate student and graduate research associate in urban planning and public policy.

Annual Research Integrity Symposium

The theme of the Annual Research Integrity Symposium is "Ethics and Integrity in Research and Education" with keynote speaker Wenda Bauchspies of the National Science Foundation.

The event is 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.

Halloween Open House, Information Security Office, Oct. 27, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

ISO Open House

The Information Security Office hosts a Halloween open house with pizza, games, and prizes 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in room B78 of Texas Hall.

'Nosferatu' 100th anniversary

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first film adaptation of Dracula, the silent movie Nosferatu. The English Department hosts the show 7-9 p.m Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Rosebud Theatre of the University Center. Bring a canned good for the Maverick Food Pantry.

Fall Harvest & Trunk-or-Treat

The School of Social Work hosts its annual Fall Harvest & Trunk-or-Treat 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in lot 49. The drive-thru event for faculty, staff, and students features candy and food for those who need it from Tarrant Area Food Bank. Costumes are encouraged.

Family-friendly fun

The fraternity and sorority community invites families to enjoy children's games, activities, popcorn, candy, and more at the Great Pumpkin Carnival 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in Maverick Circle.

Register your team for the annual Homecoming Chili Cook-Off on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Teams will compete to win the ultimate prize of Chili Cook-Off champion, bragging rights, and an awesome trophy. Open to all UTA, students, faculty, staff, and alumni groups.

Be part of the annual Homecoming Parade, set for 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, down Spaniolo Drive along the College Park District. This year's theme is "Once Upon a Maverick."
