Celebrate the holidays at today's reception

Enjoy delicious food, the company of great colleagues, and the festive sounds of the UTA Jazz Orchestra at the Faculty and Staff Holiday Reception at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Bluebonnet Ballroom and foyer in the University Center.

Aswath, Chen named to NAI

Pranesh Aswath and Wei Chen were elected to the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Aswath is senior vice provost for academic planning and policy and professor of materials science and engineering, and Dr. Chen is a professor of physics.

Hispanic leadership certificate

Maria Yareli Delgado, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies, created the Hispanic Service Leadership Preparation Certificate program for the College of Education.

Quantum communication

Michael Vasilyev, a professor of electrical engineering, will lead a National Science Foundation-funded project to expand research and education in quantum information science and engineering.

Learning tech certificate

Hugh Kellam, UTA assistant professor in learning sciences, heads a new graduate-level Certificate in Instructional and Learning Design Technology in the College of Education.

Lighting up memory

Hanli Liu, professor of bioengineering, co-authored a study that showed a noninvasive light therapy known as transcranial photobiomodulation can improve short-term memory in humans.

2022 Arlington Holiday Lights Parade

Cowley named holiday parade grand marshal

UTA President Jennifer Cowley will be the grand marshal at the annual Arlington Holiday Lights Parade Saturday, Dec. 10. Look for more Mavericks in the parade, too.

Before the parade are reindeer games at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, events at the Levitt Pavilion, and pictures with Santa.

A sale open to the public is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.

Maverick Fort Worth Takeover. Pregame Reception, Dec. 10. UTA

Maverick Takeover at Dickies Arena

Join UTA Alumni Relations and The Maverick Club at the Maverick Fort Worth Takeover for a pre-game reception at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, before UTA takes on Texas State at Dickies Arena.

The reception is free, but a game ticket is required for entry. RSVP at give.uta.edu/maverick-takeover.

MME earns Chancellor’s Excellence Award

UTA’s Office of Marketing, Messaging, and Engagement received the Chancellor’s Excellence Award in Media Relations during the UT System’s Advancement Academy conference this week. The award recognizes overall excellence in communications efforts involving the news media that educate and inform the public about a specific program, initiative, or situation.

UTA earned the award for its rollout of the Texas Tier One announcement on the University website, in the press, on social media, and in its alumni and research magazines.

Proctored exams available

Academic Testing Services offers proctored exam services for UTA faculty and students. ATS is located in room 004 in the basement of University Hall.

UTA faculty members are welcome to request proctoring services for their exams through ATS. This service is free to students and faculty.

Proctoring can be done for make-up exams, tests, and for one or all students in the class

Please view the ATS website and review the faculty submission form (Submit Exam Request > Exam Request Process) to request days and times to reserve space for your students to take an exam in the ATS labs. Submissions for spring 2023 semester will open on Monday, Dec. 12.

WFSN executive board

WFSN invited to national conference

Members of UTA’s Women’s Faculty and Staff Network (WFSN) executive board were invited to speak at the American Educational Research Association’s Research on Women and Education conference held Dec. 1-3 in Houston. Sonja Ezell, Mistie Maskil, and Margie Jackymack were asked to share their insights on the success and impact of the WFSN, which provides a University-wide forum for the discussion of ideas and mutual concerns of women faculty and staff with the goal of informing University policies.

Holiday donation drive

Help the Women's Faculty and Staff Network's donation drive to benefit Tarrant County's SafeHaven through Friday, Dec. 9. Donations can be made online or at two locations on campus.

Research Opportunities

Thermal comfort survey

Take a few minutes to say how comfortable you are in your space (office, cubicle, classroom, lab, resident hall) by taking a thermal comfort survey, conducted by Atefe Makhmalbaf, assistant professor of architecture. Results will help identify where energy is being wasted at UTA. For instance, being too warm on a cold winter day or too cold on a hot summer day indicates waste of energy.
