UTA should be one of nation’s most inclusive, impactful research universities

Jennifer Cowley, the president-designate of UT Arlington, said the University she soon will lead can forge a path as one of the nation’s most inclusive and impactful research universities.

Cowley, addressing community leaders, lawmakers, campus officials, and representatives of the University of Texas System on Wednesday at a welcome reception at College Park Center hosted by UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken, said she is inspired and energized by what she has learned about UTA since the announcement of her appointment earlier this year.

Her UTA tenure officially begins Thursday, April 28, when she will become the University’s first female president and 10th overall.

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s new postbaccalaureate graduate certificate in health care informatics aims to train students early in their careers on the value of health care data, how to gather it, and how to make informed decisions with it.

Medal of Honor recipient

Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient Britt Slabinski will share his experiences in battle and as a medal honoree at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the SEIR building. Register to attend.

Block Party

The annual Block Party will host live music, carnival-style treats, games, and activities galore 7-10 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Brazos Park. Food and drinks are for UTA on-campus residents. Light refreshments for everyone.

Startup Con coming

Interested in entrepreneurship and the UTA startup ecosystem? Come to the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Innovation's Startup Con and an Open House 3-6 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the corner of UTA Boulevard and Center Street.

'Unexpected Encounters'

Kick off Asian American/Pacific Islander and Jewish American Heritage Month with the panel discussion "Unexpected Encounters: Asian American and Jewish American Identities in Art and History." The hybrid program is 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in room 2102A and via Zoom.

Campus picnic to welcome new president

Join UTA students, faculty, and staff for a special barbeque lunch and a chance to welcome UTA's 10th President Jennifer Cowley to the Maverick Family. A campus-wide picnic will be 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Brazos Park.

Vegetarian options will be available.

In case of inclement weather, the picnic will be held in the Bluebonnet Ballroom inside the E.H. Hereford University Center.

Women's tennis win SBC regular season title

For a second straight season, the Maverick women's tennis team is Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Champions after defeating Arkansas State 4-1 Friday. The team is in a three-way tie for first place in the SBC with South Alabama and Georgia State going into the conference tournament Thursday-Saturday, April 21–23, in Peachtree City, Ga.

The UT Arlington men's tennis team's season came to an end Friday, falling to No. 2 seed South Alabama 4-0 in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Women's golf in final round at SBC tourney

UT Arlington women's golf team heads into the final round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship from LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., today, Tuesday, April 19. Junior Heidrun Hlynsdottir tied for second place after Monday's play.

The men's golf team goes to the SBC Championship Sunday-Wednesday, April 24-27, at Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark.

Science Week

The College of Science will present Science Week, Monday-Friday, April 18-24. The special events highlight the expertise and achievements of the college’s faculty, students, and alumni and includes live podcast recordings, panel discussions, workshops, and planetarium shows.

Library mural competition

The deadline for the UTA Libraries' mural competition is Thursday, April 21. The winning work be displayed in the Central Library. The winning artist will receive a $250 UTA Bookstore credit.

Read at Homerathon

The Department of Philosophy and Humanities and the University Classics Club sponsors the long-running UTA tradition of the Homerathon, a day-long reading of Homer's Odyssey 7 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, on the University Center mall. Volunteer to read.

Archiving the Pandemic

UTA Libraries Archiving the Pandemic exhibit commemorates submissions about the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibit, which is a small selection of photographs, runs through Saturday, April 30, in the sixth floor atrium of the Central Library.

Student engagement survey

First-year students and seniors who complete the National Survey of Student Engagement before Sunday, May 15, will be eligible to enter a drawing for one of 20 $100 Amazon gift cards. Eligible students can access the survey through Canvas.

Undergrad Exit Survey

Students graduating in May 2022 should complete the Undergraduate Exit Survey, available through Canvas. Responses are confidential. Eligible students will receive invites from gradteam@uta.edu.
