Remembering astronaut and UTA trailblazer Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian American woman to fly in space, earned her master’s degree in aerospace engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Last week marked the 20th anniversary of her death in the space shuttle Columbia disaster, and the University continues to honor her legacy with an on-campus memorial and both a residence hall and a scholarship bearing her name. Cavallo recognized for advancing science education

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has named Ann Cavallo, assistant vice provost and distinguished professor of science education, as a fellow.

Education and democracy

The Center for Mexican American Studies hosts Aurelio Nuño, former secretary of education for Mexico, Thursday, Feb. 9, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Red River Room. Nuño will present his lecture "The Hidden Paradox of Education and Democracy: Power, Political Mobilization, and the Quality of Education."

Journey into Black history

The College of Business' Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Group will host Jerry Hawkins, executive director of Dallas Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation and co-founder of The Imagining Freedom Institute, for a public lecture titled "A Journey into the Black History of Arlington, Fort Worth, and Tarrant County" Thursday, Feb. 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

CAAS conference

The Center for African American Studies presents its 11th annual conference Thursday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will hear about various topics critical to the theme of Black culture and institutions, including a special presentation by Opal Lee. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Benefits orientation

This one-hour session hosted by the Office of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion provides graduate teaching assistants and graduate research assistants with an overview of the various employee benefits programs that the University offers. Register to attend the session Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m.

Maverick Scholarship Summit

Prospective and current Mavericks can discover the tools to apply for scholarships with confidence at the Maverick Scholarship Summit Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m at the University Center. Register to attend.

Nominate your peers

The Outstanding Student Leader Awards recognize students for their commitment to community, demonstrated leadership skills, and lasting impact at UTA. UTA faculty, staff, and students are invited to nominate any student leader for this year's awards. Submit your nominations by Friday, Feb. 17.

TExBioMed Summer Institute

The Training and Experiential Learning in Biomedical Informatics (TExBioMed) Summer Institute at UTA supports short-term training that prepares undergraduate students for biomedical informatics and data science graduate studies and research careers. Eleven students will each receive a $7,200 stipend to participate. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

UTA Night with the Mavericks

Join UTA alumni and friends to cheer on the Dallas Mavericks as they take on the Utah Jazz Tuesday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. Purchase discounted tickets to receive an exclusive hat and entry to take a shot from the free-throw line! While you’re at the game, stop by the UTA table on the concourse for fun giveaways and prizes.

Safe attachments

On Friday, Jan. 27, OIT enabled Safe Attachments for SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams for all users at UTA. All UTA-owned devices are equipped with Microsoft Defender to increase security against malicious attacks. Safe Attachments provides additional levels of security and will help satisfy the UT System policy on malware prevention.
