UTA artist’s work featured in museums from Texas to Taiwan

Yana Payusova’s artistic roots trace back to her days of training at a fine arts academy in Saint Petersburg, Russia. “It was a little bit like Hogwarts,” she said.

But Payusova, assistant professor of art and art history, says her personal identity as an artist didn’t begin coming into focus until she shot five rolls of film inside a Russian prison.

Maverick has published four novels in four years

Inspiration struck Seraphina Nova Glass, assistant professor of instruction and playwright-in-residence, on a drive home from rehearsal for a play she was directing at UTA. An avid fan of thrillers and crime fiction, she was listening to one on audiobook when it occurred to her: “I could write one of these.”

Drone showcase

Students will take to the air in the third annual Raytheon Technologies Drone Showcase competition on Saturday, April 15, at Maverick Stadium on the UTA campus. During the competition, student-built drones will use camera and infrared-based sensors to disable other schools' ground vehicles while protecting their own unmanned ground vehicles.

Community concert

The UTA Department of Music invites all Mavericks to enjoy a free concert featuring Scott Sean White and Grammy-nominated musicians Sierra Hull and Justin Moses on Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at Levitt Pavilion in Arlington.

Volunteer Fair

Visit the Volunteer Fair on Tuesday, April 18, on the second floor of the University Center to learn about opportunities to help the community. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend and connect with local service organizations.

Block party

Join Apartment and Residence Life and the Residence Hall Advisory Board for Block Party: Mavericks on the Moon on Thursday, April 20, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. The party will feature games, food, attractions, and great music.

Graduation planning

Students who are planning to graduate this May but have not submitted their registration in MarchingOrder must do so by Friday, April 14.

In-person commencement ceremonies will be held Friday, May 12, at Globe Life Field. UTA’s virtual commencement ceremony will be available to stream starting Monday, May 15. A complete ceremony schedule is available online.

RSVP to Lavender Graduation

Spring 2023 graduates who identify as LGBTQ+ can sign up for Lavender Graduation, a special commencement ceremony recognizing the achievements of queer Mavericks on Tuesday, April 18, at 6 p.m. Friends, family, and graduates are encouraged to RSVP.

Evening of Black Excellence

The Evening of Black Excellence is a celebration on Wednesday, May 10, honoring Black, African, and African American students who are graduating this semester. The ceremony embraces the pillars of scholarship, heritage, culture, and community. Friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate their graduate's academic achievements. Register by Wednesday, May 3, to attend.

Survey on water conservation behaviors

Researchers from the Department of Civil Engineering and the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs invite the campus community to take their survey on water conservation behaviors (WCBs), which will be used to create a policy guide to help improve individuals' participation in WCBs.

Graduation survey

Are you graduating this spring? Complete the undergraduate or master's exit survey for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card. Graduates will receive an invitation from gradteam@uta.edu with the link to the survey, and it is also available in Canvas. Complete the survey by Wednesday, May 31, to enter the drawing.

Bilingual certification

UTA students who speak another language in addition to English can test their proficiency to receive the Global Seal of Biliteracy, an internationally recognized micro-credential that conveys language proficiency and can be easily verified by employers. GET PHIT

Undergraduate students interested in public health informatics and technology are invited to apply for the GET PHIT summer boot camp, a two-week introduction to public health informatics, data standards, analytics, epidemiology, and more.
