“Free Our People”—A Conversation with Disability Rights Organizers Bob Kafka and Stephanie Thomas

Thursday, Jun 03, 2021

Longtime disability rights leaders and co-organizers of the Capitol Crawl, Bob Kafka and Stephanie Thomas, speak at University Hall. As co-leaders of ADAPT and ADAPT of Texas, the two helped to organize the nonviolent, direct action protests for accessible public transit that helped to lay the groundwork for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Today, they and other ADAPT members continue to fight for disabled people’s right to live freely in the community, rather than in nursing homes or institutions.

Learn more about how you can intern with ADAPT of Texas via the Disability Studies Minor and about ADAPT’s essential (and continuing) role in disability rights movement at the ADAPT online museum and UTA Libraries’ Texas Disability History Collection.
