Maverick Speaker Series: Jackson Katz

Tickets are still available to hear renowned global thought leader Jackson Katz discuss “The Big Picture: Gender Violence in Historical, Cultural, and Political Perspectives” at the next Maverick Speakers Series event. Dr. Katz co-founded the multiracial, mixed-gender Mentors in Violence Prevention program. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Texas Hall. TICKETS

ASSESSING NATURAL DISASTER DAMAGE
Assessing Natural Disaster Damage

Nick Fang, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, will use unmanned aerial vehicles to perform reconnaissance after natural disasters and more accurately and quickly assess damage to buildings. Dr. Fang has received a $299,000 National Science Foundation grant that will accelerate the conventional insurance adjustment process for which homeowners often wait months. READ MORE

INVESTIGATING HUMAN INFERTILITY
Investigating Human Infertility

With significant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), biology Assistant Professor Sen Xu is investigating fundamental biological processes that lead to fertility problems in humans. Dr. Xu received a five-year, $1.89 million NIH grant to use cutting-edge genomic approaches to understand the genetic mechanisms of parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction. READ MORE

Legacy Leaders Mary Ann (’85 MBA) and Bob Van Siclen served as honorary hosts for the second annual Legacy Leaders Luncheon last week at UTA. The event celebrated legacy giving and recognized recent Legacy Leaders for advancing the University’s mission through their estate gifts.

Nursing graduate Mercy Mumba (’10 BSN, ’16 PhD) and her research team will receive a five-year, $2.79 million National Institutes of Health grant to combat the growing opioid crisis. Dr. Mumba is an assistant professor in the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama.

Maverick Open | Join UTA student-athletes, coaches, and staff for the annual Maverick Open Golf Outing at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington. Check-in is at noon with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds offset the costs of scholarships, tutoring, and nutrition for student-athletes. REGISTER

Digital Culture Roundtable | UTA’s Center for Theory presents “Digital Culture: Promises, Progress, and Power,” a roundtable discussion about the role of digital technology in society.
