View the new facility through the eyes of six MAC fanatics

Get MACtive!

Assistant Vice President Doug Kuykendall overheard two students talking shortly after the Maverick Activities Center opened in September. "I'm going to the MAC," one said. The comment put a smile on Kuykendall's face as wide as the new facility's giant wall of windows. "What a refreshing thing to hear," said the 1974 UT Arlington graduate and director of Campus Recreation. "People aren't saying that this is just OK. They're saying, ‘This is great.' " The MAC has quickly become a hot spot for alumni, students, faculty and staff. For working out, it features every cardio machine imaginable, an array of free weights and circuit weights, an indoor jogging track, a gym with four full-sized basketball courts and more-all in a light, open and well-designed setting. For hanging out, there's the Internet café, smoothie bar and lounge/study areas. And don't forget the spacious locker rooms with their omnipresent flat-screen TVs. Phase Two, which wraps up this spring, adds even more amenities. "The MAC helps keep our students fit and healthy for academic, co-curricular and career pursuits," Student Affairs Vice President Frank Lamas said. "They will experience some of their greatest college memories there." Travis Boren is making memories. You'll find the sophomore finance major there five nights a week. It's so nice, he can't stay away, he says. "Students are proud to come to such a great facility that offers so much more than just a place to work out."
