How to Get:

Updating A Department Lab

How to Use:

OIT creates a bootable restore image to help lab administrators restore software to lab machines. This document explains the process of using the image to restore the lab.

In order to restore the machines using the image, you will need the following:

  • Bootable external firewire drive containing the restore disk images for the lab: 2TB Firewire 800
  • Password for the xxart account.

If you do not have or do not know any of the information listed, please contact a Faculty/Staff Administrator.

To do a full restore of the machine:

  1. Eject all CD/DVD's, USB thumb drives, external USB and/or Firewire drives, and any other type of mountable disks.
  2. Power down the computer.
  3. Connect the external Firewire drive that contains the lab image.
  4. Hold down the option key on the keyboard and power on the computer.
  5. Hold down the option key until you see a selection of boot volumes.
  6. Wait until the wristwatch cursor turns into a normal cursor.
  7. Select the BOOTARTMP41 volume and hit the return key.
  8. Login to the xxart account.
  9. Open the IMAGESART disk volume on the desktop.
  10. Open the /IMAGESART/ARTMP41/RUN-FIRST.command file and verify that the internal hard drive is disk0.
  11. **IMPORTANT** If and only if the internal hard drive is listed as disk0, then open the /IMAGESART/ARTMP41/0artmp41disk0.command file. Opening 0artmp41disk0.command will erase disk0, so if the internal hard drive is not disk0, this script will try to erase what it thinks is disk0.
  12. Wait until the 0artmp41disk0.command is done before going to the next step.
  13. Copy /IMAGESART/ARTMP41/ARTMP41-asr.dmg to the IMAGE partition of the internal hard drive.
  14. Wait until the disk image is done copying before going to the next step.
  15. Open NetRestoreUM.app from the Desktop.
  16. Click on the lock icon in the NetRestore window.
  17. Enter the xxart password.
  18. Click the Restore button - This will rebuild the UNICASTMAN partition.
  19. When the UNICASTMAN rebuild is done, click the Shutdown button.
  20. The NetRestore application should change the default boot volume to UNICASTMAN and thus the computer should boot to the UNICASTMAN partition.
  21. Login to the xxart account.
  22. NetRestore should auto launch.
  23. Click on the lock icon in the NetRestore window.
  24. Enter the xxart password.
  25. Click the Restore button.
  26. Once the restore is done, the computer will automatically reboot to the MACOSX partition.

To do a MACOSX only restore of the machine:

  1. These instructions assume that the Full Rebuild instructions have been done and that you want to only rebuild the MACOSX partition.
  2. Eject all CD/DVD's, USB thumb drives, external USB and/or Firewire drives, and any other type of mountable disks.
  3. Power down the computer.
  4. Hold down the option key on the keyboard and power on the computer.
  5. Hold down the option key until you see either the EFI password prompt or the boot volume selector.
  6. If you see the EFI password prompt, enter the EFI password.
  7. Select the UNICASTMAN volume and hit the return key.
  8. Login to the xxart account.
  9. NetRestore should auto launch.
  10. Click on the lock icon in the NetRestore window.
  11. Enter the xxart password.
  12. Click the Restore button.
  13. Once the restore is done, the computer will automatically reboot to the MACOSX partition.
