UT Arlington has adopted MavMail (e-mail) as an official means of communication with students. MavMail is used to remind students about important dates and deadlines and to publicize events and activities. Currently, this information is sent to students each Sunday as an electronic newsletter. Over time, the University will begin conducting certain business transactions exclusively by e-mail, such as notification about financial aid awards and tuition statements. At a point, paper notifications and statements will no longer be sent to students. (Read the President’s message on electronic communication.)
As part of this initiative, all students should change their UT Arlington e-mail address to a new format. The old address, which included the student’s initials and a portion of the Social Security number, should be replaced with an address selected by the student from a list of predetermined options. (It does not contain the Social Security number.) First time enrollees at UT Arlington are able to access their MavMail account 24 hours after registering for classes and are expected to do so. Please keep in mind that in choosing a new e-mail address, your NetID will not be changed. (Select your new e-mail address now.)
Currently, students are expected to check MavMail each week. As messages become more targeted, it may be necessary to check it more frequently. Students are also expected to manage their “inbox” so that it does not become full, causing messages to be returned as undeliverable.
Students are no longer able to redirect mail automatically from MavMail to a private e-mail account since the University cannot guarantee that messages sent to private accounts are received. Instead, students must access a message using their MavMail account and can then forward it to a private account. (Read the Associate Provost’s message on redirecting.)
There is no additional charge to students for using the MavMail account. Once created, the account stays active as long as a student is enrolled at UT Arlington. If a student does not enroll at UT Arlington for two long semesters (fall and spring), the account becomes inactive. However, if a student reenrolls at a later date, the same e-mail address will be used. Summer and Intersession enrollments are not necessary to maintain an active account. |
