Event: Spring Dance Tryout 

Time: 6 - 9pm

Location: Maverick Activities Center, Room 102

Details: This will be where candidates will go through technique across the floor and learn a short jazz combo and hip hop combo.  Applicants will go through skills across the floor and learn about 6 8-counts of two combinations. We will also begin to conduct interviews at this time.  This should be considered mandatory for all interested candidates.

Attire: All candidates should wear a black sports bra, black hot shorts/spanx, tights and jazz shoes, as well as project a collegiate image at all times.  You may bring tennis shoes and sweatpants to change into for hip hop. Hair should be pulled back and out of face. Males should wear black shorts and a black t-shirt. No piercings or visible tattoos are allowed.  No other University, school, gym, or sports team logos should be worn.

Event: Spring Dance Tryout

Location: Maverick Activity Center, Room 102

Details: Candidates will perform skills across the floor in front of the judges, as well as the 2 combinations they learned the previous evening. We will also be concluding interviews at this time. Candidates should wear the same thing as the previous evening (all black), as well as hair pulled back and out of face with makeup. No body piercings, or visible tattoos are allowed.  You may wear one stud earring per ear. No other University, school, gym, or sports team logos should be worn. 

Tryout Information

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of the UT-Arlington Dance Team is to support the athletic teams at the University of Texas at Arlington, and also represent the University at a variety of alumni, civic, & charitable events. UTA Dancers are representatives of the University and should display a positive and collegiate image at all times. The spirit program is part of the Campus Recreation Department in the Division of Student Affairs.

SQUAD DESCRIPTION

The UTA Dance team has historically consisted of anywhere from 18-24 members. In recent years, the team has become consisted of both females and males.

These numbers can fluctuate from year to year given the needs of the team.

TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS

  • Freshman/Transfer Students – Submitted application to UTA by tryouts
  • Current Students:
    • Enrolled at UT Arlington (minimum of 9 hours)
    • Minimum semester & cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Current Health Insurance
    • Must provide a paper copy for us to keep on file
  • $20 Tryout Fee
    • Cash or Check made out to “UTA Spirit Groups”

TRYOUT ATTIRE

Ladies should wear appropriate shoes (jazz and tennis shoes for hip hop), black hot pants (shorts and may bring sweatpants for hip hop portion), and a black sports bra top. Please wear hair pulled back from face and make-up that projects a collegiate image. Men should wear black gym shorts and a black t-shirt. No affiliation with any other schools, gyms, teams, or clubs should be worn. No jewelry or visible tattoos are allowed. You may wear studded earrings.

  • Triple or quad pirouettes
  • Fouettes and turns in second
  • Turning disc
  • Russians
  • Switch Russians
  • Reverse leaps
  • Leg holds
  • Needle turns
  • Kip-up (hip hop)
  • Head flip (hip hop)
  • Basic background in jazz/ballet
  • Familiar with pom motions

THINGS TO TURN IN 

  • Tryout Application (can be found at: http://www.uta.edu/spirit/dance/tryout-forms.php )
  • A full length picture of yourself (must be from head to toe)
  • A copy of your most current transcript (for current UTA students or transfers)
  • A copy of your acceptance letter to UTA (for incoming Freshmen)

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Practices in the Fall and Spring will be Monday 4:00-6:00pm, Wednesday 7:00-9:00pm and Thursday 4:30-6:30pm.
  • Workout sessions will be Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
  • Camp will be July 27 – 29, 2016.
  • Scholarships are available and are distributed according to years in the program.
  • Non-Texas residents are eligible to have their out-of-state tuition waived.
