OPT Employment Reporting

The information here is for enrolled International Students on F-1 visas.

OPT Employment Information Reporting

All students on OPT (whether 12-month OPT, or the 24-month STEM Extension OPT) are required to keep their Physical Presence address and phone number current in MyMav. Please note that while there are several address types in MyMav, the one that is used for F-1 status maintenance is the "Physical Presence Address." This address should be the location where you live. It must be updated within 10 days of any change. If you forget your password for MyMav, please contact the Help desk at 817-272-2208 or helpdesk@uta.edu.

During Post-Completion OPT (12-month or 24-month Extension), F-1 status is dependent upon employment.

Students are limited to 90 days of unemployment during Post-Completion OPT.

Students granted the 24-month OPT extension may not accrue a total of more than 150 days of unemployment during the entire 36 month OPT period (the original 90 days from 12 month OPT plus an additionally allowed 60 days).

Optional Practical Training is always limited to positions "directly related to the student's major area of study." For both the 12-month OPT self-reporting in the SEVP Student Portal and the 24-Month STEM OPT reporting via our form, students must explain how their current job meets this requirement. We recommend the following format:

I work as a (job title) at (employer name). In my job, I (description of employment job duties). My work requires (information essential to your position that you gained in your studies) which I studied at The University of Texas at Arlington while pursuing a degree in (list your degree).

Please note that for STEM OPT reporting, OIE will not retype your explanation, but will simply note that an explanation is on file and available if needed.

All students on OPT are required to report updated Employer Information in a timely manner. Students on 12 month OPT are responsible for reporting employment information directly in the SEVP Student Portal. The following information must be updated in the SEVIS portal within 10 days of any change:

  • Employer name
  • Employer address (actual work location)
  • Whether the employment is full-time (more than 20 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours or less per week)
  • The start date for each employer (and end date as relevant)
  • How the position directly relates to the field of study listed on the I-20

For information about how to log into the SEVP student portal and trouble-shooting information, please follow the instructions here. Please note that the link to the portal that you receive in your email will expire, so for future log-ins you should navigate directly to the log-in screen found here.

Please note that you have the option to either edit or add new employment. Editing will make changes to the existing information. If you have a new employer, please take care to add a new employer so that the information about your previous employer remains.

The SEVP Student Portal will not accept employment information that is not within 10 days of the start date. For now, OIE is still able to add the information into the SEVIS database directly. If you are unable to add employment information while on 12-month OPT because you have missed the reporting deadline you can submit the form below and we will add the information for you if possible. This form is intended only for students who have failed to report in a timely manner.

12 months OPT EFORM IN GLOBALMAVS

Students currently on the 24-month STEM Extension of OPT are required to update employer information through The Office of International Education. Students on STEM OPT are also required to report every 6 months regardless of any changes in employment. At the 6 month and 18-month validation points, a new I-983 form is not required if there have been no new changes to employment. A completed I-983 is required when reporting any changes and at the 12- and 24-month reporting points. For the 12-month reporting, the Evaluation of Student Progress section on page 5 must be completed. For the final reporting at the 24-month point, the Final Evaluation on Student Progress section on page 5 must be completed.

The Final Evaluation on Student Progress must also be completed when reporting the last date of employment with a particular employer.

All 24-month STEM OPT reporting is done via the STEM OPT Employment Reporting form.
