Buzzcuts

CYBER SUPERB. U.S. News and World Report has ranked three UTA online graduate programs among the nation's best in its "Best of the Online Graduate Programs" edition. The College of Business Administration's online M.B.A. was Texas' only professionally accredited program selected. Likewise, the School of Education's master of education in curriculum and instruction was the state's only selection among graduate online programs in education. Also recognized was the College of Engineering's online graduate program.

NOW HEAR THIS. In the "Behind the Music" story in last fall's issue of UTA Magazine, the acoustical designer who created the acclaimed sound system at Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall was incorrectly identified. The correct name of the world-renowned sound expert is Christopher Jaffe of Jaffe Holden Acoustics, Inc.

LIVE AND LEARN. Construction is under way on both phases of a 240-unit apartment complex on the west side of campus. University Village West will house approximately 500 students and is scheduled for completion by July. Phase I will occupy the southeast corner of Second Street and Summit Avenue, and Phase II is being built west of the Activities Building parking lot.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE FOR ALL. UTA has approved an online criminal justice degree program aimed at providing a flexible alternative for students otherwise unable to complete their degrees. The bachelor of criminology and criminal justice targets students with at least two years of college as well as law enforcement officers, criminal justice practitioners and social service workers.

STRESS BUSTER. The American Psychological Association has awarded management Professor James C. Quick a presidential citation for his contributions to science, education, practice and public service. Dr. Quick is a leading authority on work stress and health issues. His theory characterizing stress as a preventable health problem has been critical in understanding the impact of stress on workers.

MONEY FOR TEACHERS. UTA's Center for Bilingual Education has received a $1.2 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant is designed to increase the pool of qualified bilingual education teachers in prekindergarten through fourth grade, motivate high school students to remain in school and explore college education and bilingual education as a career option, and retool in-service teachers to meet bilingual/ESL certification requirements.

BAND ON THE RUN. The UTA Marching Band was one of two college bands selected to perform at the Bands of America Grand National Championships last fall in Indianapolis. The 175-member band's 13-minute routine, titled "Passion," featured the music of various Latin dances.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT. History major Melissa Bakeman is one of six students nationwide to receive the 2001 Florence Hood Miner Award. The honor recognizes juniors who have made significant contributions to Delta Zeta sorority.
