If thesis track, note your research interest area (i.e., genetics, genomics, microbiology, ecology, systematics, or evolution). Indicate the faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in working. If you are interested in a lab rotation, indicate this. Your e-mail will be forwarded to the appropriate faculty. If you are not sure of the direction of your research, please at least indicate a research area in your letter of intent, and the Graduate Studies Committee will attempt to match you with an appropriate faculty.

Application deadlines Please note the target dates listed at the top of this document. Although the graduate school deadlines are often later, the Department of Biology will begin reviewing applications and awarding assistantships shortly after these dates. Your likelihood of receiving an assistantship decreases substantially after the target dates have passed.

Faculty sponsor: During the application process you will be assigned a faculty sponsor (typically one of the faculty you indicated in your letter) who will advocate for you when assistantships are awarded. The faculty sponsor is an interim advisor, until such time as you have picked a thesis lab and advisor. M.S. (thesis) must have picked a thesis professor by the end of the first semester of enrollment (see Graduate Handbook).

Checking the status of your application: Please contact the Biology Graduate Program Assistant directly (see contact information at the top of this document).

Graduate handbook: Please see the Graduate Handbook for the Department for additional information. (the Handbook is currently being updated for next year).
