Structure and Function of Organisms
Section 002 MWF 11-11:50 Room 119 L.S.

I. Grading: Your grade will be determined as follows

A. Three lecture examinations: 33%
B. Laboratory grade: 33%
C. Final Examination-Comprehensive 33%
D. Grades: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C = 70-79; D = 60-69; F = below 60.
E.  A research paper may be required.

Use scantron 882 E and a #2 pencil.  Erasures should be called to the attention of the professor at the time the scantron is turned in on exam day.

II. Textbook: Biology, 7th ed. by Campbell and  Reece

III. Withdrawal:

In order to receive a grade of W, you must drop by March 28. All forms are processed in 346 and 347 Life Science.  See University Drop Policy.

VI. MAKE-UP LECTURE EXAMINATIONS will be given at the time of the final if you have an excused absence. Make up exams will probably be essay and grades on make-ups are almost always lower than grades on the regularly scheduled exams. No more than one make up exam will be given.

VII. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

IX. ATTENDANCE POLICY. Attendance is required at each lecture and excessive absences can potentially affect your course grade.

X. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. It is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsion from the University. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." (Regents' Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22).

XI. COURSE DESCRIPTION. Structure and Function of Organisms (3-2) 3 hours credit. The study of structure and function in plants and animals. Topics to be covered include structure at the level of the cell, tissue, organ and individual growth, transport/circulation/gas exchange, nutrition, reproduction, development, endocrinology, and animal neural regulation. The laboratory will examine plant and animal structure and function with observational and experimental approaches. Prerequisites: BIOL 1441.

XII. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: To understand the major physiological mechanisms that allow plants and animals to function.

XIV. Drop for non-payment of tuition:  Payment must be received by the term due date of January 9, 2008 or your registration will be cancelled.  If your registration is cancelled for non-payment, you may reregister for classes but only is seats are available.

XV.  FINAL REVIEW WEEK

A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week.  The purpose of this week is to allow students sufficient time to prepare for final examinations.  During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi.  During Final Review Week, and instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations.  In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week.

XVII.  BOMB THREATS: If anyone is tempted to call in a bomb threat, be aware that UTA will attempt to trace the phone call and procecute all responsible parties.  Every effort will be made to avoid cancellation of presentations/tests caused by bomb threats.  Unannounced alternate sites will be available for these classes.  Your instructor will make you aware of alternate class sites in the event that your classroom is not available.
