UT Arlington          The University of Texas at Arlington

1.) What Are The Program Goals ?

a.) Provide Ph.D. candidates with an understanding of the needs and operation of industrial and government laboratories.

b.) Expose students to targeted, applied research.

c.) Provide potential employers with a preview of new Ph.D.'s.

d.) Encourage cooperation between academic and industrial laboratories.

2.) Which Students Participate ?

a.) All candidates for the Ph.D. in Chemistry must participate.

b.) Most have begun their doctoral research programs and have taken virtually all required coursework.

3.) How Are Students Matched to Industrial Laboratories ?

The UTA research supervisor, the graduate advisor and key people in the industrial or government lab work to identify an individual best suited for an available appointment.  The proposed industrial or government research program should expand the knowledge base of the student, fall within the long term interests of that student and, generally, be of substantial interest to the industrial concern or government lab.  Routine benchwork, the type generally done by technicians, is strongly discouraged.

4.) How Is Compensation Arranged ?

The Department works with the industrial or government lab to create a mutually agreeable arrangement. Typically, the student remains enrolled at UTA and the industry provides an award to cover salary (negotiated). Students who leave the Dallas-Ft. Worth area generally receive extra compensation to cover their living and/or travel expenses.

5.) What Longer Term Obligations Result From This Arrangement ?

None. It is understood that the company is not obligated to offer a position to the student upon graduation nor is the student obligated to accept an offer of permanent employment.

6.) Which Organizations Have Participated In The Program To Date ?

Alcon Labs; ARCO; Bayer; Exxon; Fina; General Dynamics; Gumbs Associates; IBM; Johnson and Johnson; 3M, MEMC; Mobil; NIH; Polytronix; Rockwell; Southern Research Institute; Southwest Research; Texas Instruments; Uniax

7.) How Many Students Have Participated In The Program To Date ?

As of January, 1996 more than fifty-five students have successfully completed this program.

8.) Whom Should I Contact to Obtain Additional Information ?
