Congratulations to Moustafa Shabana for winning the the ACES award (sustainability award) for best graduate presentation on 2010. Moustafa Shabana is a graduate student working with Professor Krishnan Rajeswar.
Congratulations to Shuai Chen for winning the graduate research presentation award from the American Chemical Society Meeting in Miniature in 2011. Shuai Chen is a graduate student working with Professor Frank Foss.

The CRC Handbook Award for Outstanding Freshman
Robert Rayford
The CRC Press sponsors a national award which honors the top Freshman Chemistry majors at universities throughout the United State. This year’s recipient is Robert Rayford, who is doing undergraduate research with Professor Kevin Schug and who intends to eventually earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry.
The Robert F. Francis Award for Outstanding Sophomore
Victor Ngo
Victor Ngo is receiving the Robert F. Francis Award for outstanding Sophomore. He is a Biochemistry major and he is currently involved in undergraduate research in Professor Dan Armstrong’s lab.
The R. L. Hoyle award for Outstanding Junior
Beatriz Garcia-Barboza
Our outstanding junior is Beatriz Garcia-Barboza. Her goal is to enter an M.D./Ph.D. program and eventually specialize in Clinical Pathology.
The John T. Murchison Award for Outstanding Senior
Duncan Sloan
Duncan Sloan, this year’s outstanding Senior, will receive two degrees in May: a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Biochemistry. He is a former United States Navy Corpsman, and his hometown is Johannesburg, South Africa.
The American Chemical Society Award for Outstanding
Chemistry/Biochemistry Major
Michael Wey
Each year the Dallas-Fort Worth Section of the American Chemical Society honors the top UT-Arlington Chemistry or Biochemistry Major, and Michael Wey was selected for this award. Michael is a very productive research scientist in Professor Heo’s lab, and he works as a Tutor in the Chemistry Clinic.
Outstanding Chemistry Clinic Tutor Award
Andy Seal
Andy Seal is receiving this year’s Outstanding Chemistry Clinic Tutor Award. Andy is a very patient and conscientious tutor. He has been an undergraduate TA during the past year and has established a reputation as a tutor and a TA who will go the extra mile to ensure that his students understand and are successful.
Chemistry and Biochemistry Society Outstanding Member Award
Chris Parikh
Chris Parikh, the current President of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Society, was selected by the faculty sponsors to receive the Outstanding Member Award. In nominating him for this award, Professor Kevin Schug spoke of Chris revitalizing the Society and getting the society involved in community service activities.
Undergraduate Teaching Award
Cynthia Griffith
Cynthia Griffith, the first in her family to receive a college degree, has been very productive in research with Professor Fred MacDonnell. In her ground-breaking research, she has made preliminary findings to determine the mechanistic pathway of a potential anti-metastatic Ruthenium Complex. This research is expected to be published in a prestigious JACS publication.
ACS 2010 Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry
Lauren Tedmon
Lauren Tedmon was selected by the Analytical Chemistry Faculty to receive the ACS 2010 Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry. Her current research in Professor Kevin Schug’s lab deals with differentiating steroid hormone metabolites using tandem mass spectrometry.
Undergraduate Research Award
Steven Poteet
Steven Poteet, this year’s undergraduate research award winner, presented his research earlier this year at the American Chemical Society National meeting in Anaheim California.
Sharon and Donald Jernigan Scholarship
Jonathan Yang
Jonathan Yang has been selected to receive the Sharon and Donald Jernigan Scholarship for $500. He is a Junior Chemistry major, and his goal is to attend Pharmacy School at Texas Tech.
Dennis S. Marynick Scholarship
Pinaki Bose
Pinaki Bose is this year’s recipient of the Dennis S. Marynick Scholarship for $500. Pinaki’s goal is to enter an M.D./ Ph.D. program and do medical research.
Daniel and Linda Armstrong Award
Nam Tran
The Daniel and Linda Armstrong Award, established by our own Welch Chair in Chemistry, Professor Dan Armstrong, goes to Nam Tran. Nam maintains a 4.0 Grade Point Average, and he was last year’s Outstanding Chemistry Freshman.
John T. Murchison Scholarship
Catrina Campbell and Tijani Osumah
The John T. Murchison Scholarship , worth $4000, is being awarded to two students this year: Catrina Campbell and Tijani Osumah.
Graduate Teaching Award
Charles Phillip Shelor
This year’s Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award goes to Phillip Shelor. He has been an outstanding TA in our Physical Chemistry lab.
Graduate Research Award
Yongjing “Lillian” Chen
Lillian Chen is receiving the Graduate Research Award. Her research was instrumental in obtaining a patent of “Electrodialytic Membrane Suppressors for Ion Chromatography Make Programmable Buffer Generators”.
Charles K. Baker Character Fellowship
Doug Carlton and Joe Aslan
The Charles K. Baker Character Fellowship was established by a UT-Arlington Alumnus who was strongly influenced by a Chemistry graduate student, Chip Baker. This year, the Fellowship is awarded to two Chemistry Graduate students: Doug Carlton and Joe Aslan.
