Lab Coordinator Educator Position

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) seeks applicants for a permanent, full-time (12 month), non-tenure-track Undergraduate Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator/Educator.

Basic duties include oversight of chemistry instructional laboratory programs, supervision and training of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), supervision and responsibility for equipping the teaching labs with reagents and prepared solutions, laboratory experiment development and troubleshooting, and coordination with lecture courses. 

As part of a new partnership with Shimadzu Scientific instruments, UTA will be acquiring over $25M in state-of-the-art instrumentation, a significant portion which will be dedicated for use in undergraduate laboratories.  The person in this new position will be expected to assist and help develop new laboratory experiments utilizing the new instrumentation and train GTA’s in their use

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or in a related field and general experience with common laboratory equipment. Available instrumentation will include gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, UV/Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy, as well as X-ray diffraction.  It is desired that the hired person will work together with current faculty, staff, and students to think creatively about how such instrumentation can be used efficiently and effectively used as a part of existing and new laboratory courses to advance the learning of undergraduate students from the freshman to senior level.

UTA is situated in the heart of the DFW metroplex and has a growing enrollment which is currently at  ~35,000 students.  The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a vibrant doctoral program with 18 research active faculty and approximately 70 graduate students, in addition to a large undergraduate population. 

Due to increasing enrollment, we are now offering laboratory instruction during some evenings (labs run 6 to 10 pm) in addition to morning and afternoon labs The applicant will be required to work several evenings per week (1 pm to 10 pm shift) in order to supervise night labs and ensure proper safety procedures are followed by the GTA’s and undergraduates.
