University Core Requirements

The University requires the following for all bachelor’s degrees in addition to courses listed under the various degree programs:

English Composition: 6 hours (1301 and 1302 or suitable substitutes).

Literature: 3 hours of English or modern language literature.

Liberal Arts: 3 hours above the freshman level from courses in the College of Liberal Arts.

U.S. History: 6 hours of American history (can include 3 hours of Texas history.)

U.S. Political Science: 6 hours covering U.S. and Texas constitutions.

Mathematics: 6 hours at level of college algebra or higher.

Natural Science**: 8 hours in a single lab science (biology, chemistry, geology or physics).

Social/Cultural Studies: 3 hours (advisor approved

Fine Arts: 3 hours from art, dance, music, architecture or theatre arts.

Computer Proficiency: demonstrated ability to use internet and important software. This requirement can be met by taking Geol. 1391

Oral Proficiency: demonstrated ability to use correct grammar and pronunciation in formal presentations. This requirement can be met by taking COMM 3302 or passing the oral presentation requirement in geology courses.

** These hours duplicate geology major requirements.

Special Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree

Students in a Bachelor of Arts degree program are required to take 14 hours of foreign language in addition to the core requirements listed above. Students may substitute advisor approved cultural/history courses for up to 6 of those 14 hours.
