Star BirthThe astrophysics group is performing research that plays an essential role in understanding the observed activity of our Sun and different stars, the existence of Earth-like planets outside the solar system, and the evolution and fate of the Universe.

Biophysics & Physiology

biophysics & physiologyThe Biophysics and Physiology Group focuses on understanding and altering biological systems at molecular, cellular up to organism level. We use advanced Biophysics tools such as AFM, optical tweezers, laser scissors, Multiphoton and near-field microscopy, Holographic imaging, patch clamping, microfluidics and optogenetics to explore, alter and understand interesting processes in cells and cellular networks.


cnmThe physics and chemistry of nanostructured materials has been a central theme of science and technology for the last few decades of the 20th century, and the trend is expected to continue. Several interdisciplinary groups of physicists, chemists and material scientists are working in this emerging area of nanoscience in the Center for Nanostructured Materials (CNM) to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, share and provide instrumentation and technical assistance, and train undergraduates and graduate students in the science of nanostructured materials.

Chaos & Nonlinear Physics

chaos & nonlinearCurrent research in this area focuses on the following topics: Routes to chaos in systems with many degrees of freedom, fractal techniques and their applications to data analysis, analytical methods for solving nonlinear differential equations, and quantum and classical descriptions of chaotic systems.

Condensed Matter Physics

condensed matter physicsThe experimental condensed matter group is performing research at the forefront of a number of areas of emerging technological importance, with major efforts in: Surface characterization, scanning, auger microscopy, positron-solid interactions, thin films, magnetic multilayers, scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA), electronic and optical properties of advanced materials, microwave studies in superconductors and magnetic materials, and nanostructured magnetic materials.

High Energy Physics

atlasThe high energy physics group is dedicated to fundamental research at the highest energy scales through participation in experiments at the world´s most advanced accelerators (D∅ at Fermilab and ATLAS at CERN).

Nano-bio physics

nano-bio physicsThe nano-bio physics group is performing research Nanoparticle based therapeutics for cancer treatment, nanoparticle based dosimetry, water soluble nanoparticles for In vivo oxygen (hypoxia) measurement in tumor, X-ray computed radiography improvement by quantum size confinement, multifunctional nanoparticles for medical imaging and detection, and cataract studies.


nmmThe significant increase of applications of advanced materials has created a great demand for deliberate exploration to nanostructured magnetic materials. Our group is currently working on hard and soft magnets spanning all four dimensions - nanoparticles (0D), nanorods and nanowires (1D), thin films and multilayers (2D), and nanostructured bulk magnets (3D).

Space Physics

space physicsThe focus of the space physics Research Group is mainly on the plasma phenomena in the terrestrial environments, including magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, ionospheric plasma outflow, auroral energization, charged particle acceleration, and wave propagation. Our research involves numerical simulation, satellite in-situ observation, and radio remote sensing.
