  • Dr. Liu is invited by the organization committee to give a talk in INTERMAG 11 Conference, Taipei, Taiwan, on bottom-up approaches to fabrication of nanocomposite magnets,  April 26, 2011.

  • Our work is mentioned in the news report “The Pull of Stronger Magnets”, Nature, Vol.472, 7 April 2011, pp22-23, http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110406/full/472022a.html (PDF attached).

  • Dr. Liu gave an invited seminar at the Materials Advantage Chapter at the Texas A&M University on hard magnetic nanoparticles, April 6, 2011.

  • Dr. Liu is invited by the organization committee to give a talk at the TMS 2011 meeting, on nanoscaling by plastic deformations, San Diego, March 1, 2011.

  • On November 29, Prof. Min Qi from Dalian University of Technology gave a Physics Seminar on crystallization of amorphous alloys under dynamic loading and high magnetic fields. Prof. Qi visited our laboratory from November 8 to December 7, 2010.

  • On November 24, Prof. Aru Yan from the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) gave a Physics Seminar on research activities on permanent magnets at NIMTE. Prof. Yan visited our laboratory for ten days after attending the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials held at Atlanta.

  • On November 21, Prof. Jinbo Yang from Peking University visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Seminar titled "Nanostructured Patterns in High Energy Product Pr-Fe-B Magnets".

  • On November 19, Prof. Ekkes Bruck from the Technical University of Delft visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Colloquium titled "Magnetocaloric Effects in Mn and Fe based Materials". Prof. Bruck is one of the pioneers in the world in magnetocaloric materials.

  • On November 10, 2010, Dr. Tom Picraux, the Chief Scientist of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology (CINT), visited our laboratory and gave a Department of Physics and the College of Science joint colloquium on synthesis and properties of nanowires. CINT is one of the DoE Nanotechnology Centers in the country, operated by Sandia National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory. We have developed collaborative project with CINT since 2006.

  • On February 17, 2010, Dr. Quanxi Jia from Los Alamos National Laboratory visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Colloquium on "Lattice strain and physical properties of self-assembled epitaxial nanocomposite films" Dr. Jia is a Los Alamos National Laboratory fellow and an APS fellow.

  • On November 24, 2009, Prof. Dechang Zeng from the South China University of Technology visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Seminar on "Advanced Magnetic Materials Research at South China University of Technology".

  • On October 23, 2009, Prof. Wei Liu from the Institute of Metals Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Seminar on "Nanocomposite Rare-earth Permanent Magnetic Thin Films".

  • A new book “Nanoscale Magnetic Materials and Applications”, edited by Drs. J.Ping Liu, Eric Fullerton, Oliver Gutfleisch and David Sellmyer, has been published by Springer. 2007 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Dr. Peter Grünberg has given his foreword to the book.   • Dr. Chins Chinnasamy from Northeastern University, Boston visited our group from June 24 to 25, 2009 and gave a Physics Seminar titled “Creating Highly Sought Magnetic Nanoparticles”

  • The 4th Annual Review of our MURI project was successfully held at the University of Maryland-College Park on May 21, 2009.

  • Dr. Liu chaired a session “Permanent Magnetic Materials” in the 2009 INTERMAG conference at Sacramento, California, on May 7, 2009.

  • Congratulations! Vikas Nandwana has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on April 20, 2009. Vikas worked in our group since 2003 and has done a great work in magnetic nanoparticle synthesis and characterization, especially in particle size control.

  • Dr. Liu gave an invited talk at the Magnetics Conference 2009, on novel approaches to fabrication of nanocomposite magnets, Chicago, April 16, 2009

  • Prof. Peter de Châtel from New Mexico State University visited our group from March 23 to 27, 2009 and gave a Physics Seminar titled “Nanoparticle Magnetism Applied in Hyperthermia” on March 26.

  • Dr. Liu chaired a session “Permanent Magnetic Materials” in the 2009 INTERMAG conference at Sacramento, California, on May 7, 2009.

  • Dr. Igal Brenner from Sandia National Laboratories and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies visited our group on February 25, 2009 and gave a physics colloquium titled “Integrated Optical Chem-Bio Sensors and Microacoustic Cytometry”.

  • Dr. Liu gave an invited talk in the TMS 2009 - 138 Annual Meeting and Exhibition, on ferromagnetic nanoparticles, San Francisco, February 16, 2009.

  • Dr. Liu chaired a session the 53nd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, Austin, Texas, November 11, 2008.

  • Congratulations! Narayan Poudyal has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on November 24, 2008. Narayan has worked in our group since 2003. He also obtained his Master degree in this Department. He has done wonderful job in nanostructured magnetic materials processing.

  • Group picnic in the fall semester was held on Oct. 4 at the Red Cane park to welcome our new members Shirly Machluf, Vuong Van Nguyen, John Griffis, Hamed Arami and Chengyang Liu.

  • Dr. Dale Huber from Sandia National Laboratories and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologioes visited our group from Sept. 24 to 25 and gave a physics colloquium titled “The Role of Surfactant Interactions in the Magnetic Properties of Chemically Synthesized Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites”.

  • Dr. Liu was invited to give the annual featured “Focus on Faculty” presentation in the University Central Library on Sept. 24. The lecture was titled “From the compass to hybrid cars --- Permanent magnets for sustainable development”.

  • Dr. Liu was invited to give presentations in the Gordon Research Conference on “Magnetic Nanostructures” at Aussois, France from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3,  and the Conference on “Research Trends in Novel Magnets for Electromagnetic Applications” at Santorini, Greece from September 3 to 5.

  • The 3rd Annual Review of our MURI project was successfully held at the University of Maryland-College Park on June 23, 2008.

  • Welcome Dr. Kendra Wallis join our group as a postdoctoral researcher. Dr. Wallis just received her Ph.D in Physics at the Texas Christian University.

  • Congratulations! Dr. Liu is selected as the recipient of University of Texas at Arlington Outstanding Research Achievement or Creative Accomplishment Award.

  • Congratulations! Our graduate student Kevin Elkins has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis (03/05/2008).

  • Congratulations to Dr. Chuanbing Rong and his wife Hongyan Pan for the arrival of their second daughter SUNNY (12/04/2007)

  • Thanksgiving news: Nanotechweb reported our research results on preparation of Sm-Co nanoparticles by surfactant-assisted ball milling (in pdf) (in html)(11/30/2007).

  • Brick-like hard-soft magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by Girija and co-workers. Compared with core/shell structured nanoparticles, this type of bi-magnetic nanoparticles can be further manipulated to construct tri- or even qua-component nanoparticle systems. The research article "Synthesis and Characterization of Bi-magnetic Brick-like Nanoparticles" will be published in Chemistry of Materials.

  • Congratulations to Kazuaki Yano on his successful pass of Master thesis defense on (11/20/2007).

  • Congratulations to Dr. Chuanbing Rong for his promotion to a Research Assistant Professor position!

  • Sm-Co hard magnetic nanoparticles with room-temperature coercivity have been successfully produced using a surfactant-assisted ball milling technique by Yiping and co-workers. This project was started several years ago and our former colleagues Vamsi, Baki and Yang have also contributed to the work. The results are published in Nanotechnology in the coming issue.

  • NanotechWeb reported research accomplishment of our group in warm compaction of magnetic nanoparticles. Chuanbing and Vikas are the major investigators in this project and our former colleagues Tejaswi and Zhiqiang (Jack) started the experiments few years ago with collaborators at UT-Dallas.(in pdf) (in html).   • Welcome Dr. Ming Yue join our group as a visiting scholar. Dr. Yue is an experienced researcher in rare earth magnets.(08/16/2007)

  • Dr. X.Y. Xiong from Monash University, Australia visited our group and gave a seminar on Microstructrural Characterization of SmCo-based Permanent Magnets Using 3D Atomic Probe and TEM.(08/10/2007)

  • High density (95% of theoretical value) bulk FePt/Fe3Pt nanocomposite magnets with a homogenous microstructure have been prepared by Chuanbing and co-workers by using high-pressure warm compaction. The results has been published in J. Appl. Phys. (more).

  • Air-stable FeCo nanoparticles with high magnetization have been synthesized by a chemical solution method developed by Girija and co-workers in our group. The results are published in J.Am.Chem.Soc. recently (more).

  • Dr. Y.F.Lu form University of Nebraska-Lincoln visited our group and gave a seminar on Micro/Nanoscale Laser-bsed Material Processing and Characterization. (07/10/2007)

  • More than 12 papers have been published or accepted to date this year. One article submitted to Advanced Materials, Size-dependent chemical and magnetic ordering in L10 FePt nanoparticles, is accepted with high remarks from all the reviewers as “important results”.
