On February 17, 2010, Dr. Quanxi Jia from Los Alamos National Laboratory visited our laboratory and gave a Physics Colloquium on "Lattice strain and physical properties of self-assembled epitaxial nanocomposite films" Dr. Jia is a Los Alamos National Laboratory fellow and an APS fellow.

fall semester was held on Oct. 4 at the Red Cane park to welcome our

Dr. Dale Huber from
Sandia National Laboratories and the Center for Integrated
Nanotechnologioes visited our group from Sept. 24 to 25 and gave a
physics colloquium titled “The Role of Surfactant Interactions in
the Magnetic Properties of Chemically Synthesized Nanoparticles and
Nanocomposites”.

Dr. Liu was invited to
give the annual featured “Focus on Faculty” presentation in the
University Central Library on Sept. 24. The lecture was titled “From
the compass to hybrid cars --- Permanent magnets for sustainable
development”.

Dr. Liu was invited to
give presentations in the Gordon Research Conference on “Magnetic
Nanostructures” at Aussois, France from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3, and the
Conference on “Research Trends in Novel Magnets for Electromagnetic
Applications” at Santorini, Greece from September 3 to 5.

successfully held at the University of Maryland-College Park on June
23, 2008.

Brick-like hard-soft magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by Girija and co-workers. Compared with core/shell structured nanoparticles, this type of bi-magnetic nanoparticles can be further manipulated to construct tri- or even qua-component nanoparticle systems. The research article "Synthesis and Characterization of Bi-magnetic Brick-like Nanoparticles" will be published in Chemistry of Materials.

Sm-Co hard magnetic nanoparticles with room-temperature coercivity have been successfully produced using a surfactant-assisted ball
milling technique by Yiping and co-workers. This project was started several years ago and our former colleagues Vamsi, Baki and Yang have also contributed to the work. The results are published in
Nanotechnology in the coming issue.

NanotechWeb reported research accomplishment of our group in warm compaction of magnetic nanoparticles. Chuanbing and Vikas are the major investigators in this project and our former colleagues Tejaswi and Zhiqiang (Jack) started the experiments few years ago with collaborators at UT-Dallas.(in pdf)

High density (95% of theoretical value) bulk FePt/Fe3Pt nanocomposite magnets with a homogenous microstructure have been prepared by Chuanbing and co-workers by using high-pressure warm compaction. The results
has been published in
J. Appl. Phys. (more).

Air-stable FeCo nanoparticles with high magnetization have been synthesized by a chemical solution method developed by Girija and co-workers in our group. The results are published in J.Am.Chem.Soc. recently (more).
